Are FMA really the ultimate in knife defense?

Seems to be what everybody else says, but I've been training in fma for 4 years now and all I know for knife defense are a bunch of technique series. You know those Inosanto 12 disarms in a row technique series fro a number one or two slash.

Sure the teacher says THIS IS JUST THE TECHNIQUE SERIES IS NOT THE APPLICATION but he has been saying that for 4 years now. When the hell am I gonna see the application?

Or is it just that...there is no application of these cool techniques?

Most students have that under control in about 3-6 months.

Guro's speciality is single stick and really flips out on stick fighting, he hates the knife.
