    "Sambo" is a racist term.

    Sambo is a racial epithet?

    What the fuck?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_%28ethnic_slur%29

I'm sorry, but now you guys have to come up with a different name. I suggest "Leglocks Aren't Cheap".

According to our good friends at Wikipedia, "the word CAMBO(SAMBO) is an acronym of САМозащита Без Оружия (SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya) meaning 'self-defense without a weapon' in Russian."

So yeah, good luck trying to get a bunch of annoyed Russians to change the acronym of their martial art just because some overly-PC North Americans told 'em so.

Yeah "Sambo" has two unrelated meanings, one of which is a racist slur and the other a combat sport. Obviously that's why some people call the wresting Sombo not Sambo. Just call it Sombo and be cool with it.

Or you could fly around the world and challenge every single SAMBO fighter to single combat and after defeating all of them, force them to change the name of it.

It's a racist term that has about as much relevance today as "coolie" or "guinea."

That is, not many people have a clue what it means.

              Besides, it's Russian, so whatever...

                  They came in an order.

Sambo, Mammy, Zip Coon, and then the Pickaninny.

The sambo is recognized by his carefree attitude, huge grin, and buffonish guffaw. He is characterized by being happy on the plantation, and a lazy aggrivation to the white master.

The Mammy was the overbearing slave-nanny, who would often be in charge of tasks, but never really given any power or say in the household, despite raising the children and doing all of the chores.

Zip Coon was made so that white people could make fun of the newly freed slaves who were slowly becoming more outspoken on their mistreatment. Zip Coon was normally a stuttering fool who would open his mouth in an attempt to say something intelligent, but it would come off as stupid sounding.

Pickininnies were little black children, and they were characterized by being animalistic and often eaten by gators. Most popular in the deep south, the pickaninny is an idea that black people were completely uncivilized from birth, and the imagery was used to increase thoughs of barbarianism in the black community.

That's what I learned in Multicultural film class, anyway.

You knew about this? And you said nothing?

I find your silence to be morally reprehensible.

That never really entered my mind, which as you pointed out is weird, because his name does have sambo in it. Lucky guess? Plus, he is the president of the ASA, you have to work your way up to the boss. Haven't you played video games before?

"Several origins of the term itself have been proposed, but it gained prominence through the children's book The Story of Little Black Sambo by Helen Bannerman, in 1898. It was the story of a boy named Sambo who outwitted a group of hungry tigers."

Sounds like a compliment to me, but what do I know.
