    Board Breaking

Dear God, Why do people do it?

I was talking to some guy in one of my classes, and martial arts came up. I mentioned I did Karate, and he said "Really? me too! Im a black belt"

We talked about our dojos, and I asked him what rank he was. He mentioned he was testing for black belt. I asked him what he had to do for the test.

    Test:
    Some basics
    Some kata
Some sparring (ok, all good so far)
AND BREAKING SOME BOARDS (I think it was 3).

It took all my self control to not explain to him that his school is complete and utter bullshit.

In my opinion, breaking boards is diagnostic for a crap school.

You can redeem the annoyingness of this thread if you tell me you do kyoukushinkai.

If he was testing for BB then how could he BE a BB?

How is his school bullshit because they break stuff?

Besides, you do Krav Maga. LOL.
Feel free to review your school.

        Normally, I would say yes.

Unless the school is designed to be for demonstration (wu shu) board breaking should be a part of martial history we forget about.

Or if you want the real Iron Palm, you gotta break a few boards. But that's not necessarily fight training, now is it?

AFAIK Kyokushin guys have to break for their BB.

Did he say what style he did? I'd check before I told him his BB was bullshit to his face, hospital bills can be quite expensive I hear.

They spend class time on breaking boards? Part of their criteria for black belt is being able to break some?

                Besides, you do Krav Maga.
I direct you to my hello thread in the newbie forum.

Feel free to review your school.
My karate dojo at home: We dont do enough sparring. Some of the senior instructors (one in particular) focus far too much on certain inessential aspects.

Karate dojo at school: Top notch, I think everything about it is excellent. The dojo is a bit small I guess, but the class sizes are proportional.

Krav Maga: The classes are too far away to go to regularly. The instructor sometimes gives classes at a local gym in NYC. The training there is not quite as rigorous as the main studio, to put it nicely.

Ive been to a few kyokushin dojos, none of them have.

Goju, and it doesnt matter. There are schools of every style in every art that suck. Some styles have more than others. Shotokan for example, is plagued by shoddy, shit dojos with instructors that couldnt get a middle-rank belt at a decent place.

Yes breaking is fucking useless, congratsu-fucking-lations for figuring this out. Next time, THINK before you start a thread.

Maybe breaking is fucking useless, but when you do it after a very demanding test and 15 two minute rounds of full contact kumite it is a test of resolve. Think before you fucking post about things you no nothing about. I know MMA is the only valid style LOL! but ignoring the basics and history is fucking ignorant.

It might depend on the place, but breaking is definitely a part of Kyokushin.

                          Edit: See, told ya...

                            Wushu no.

Wushu is form demonstrations and gymnastics. If they do board breaking it is a mixed up school.

You learn new things every day.

I retract my comment about it being diagnostic for a McDojo, but its still a waste of everyone's time. (Unless of course you are a carpenter as well as a martial artist.)
