    Doctor says no training till healed, is she being overly cautious?

    Some of you might remember I posted my Sanda fight from November. The fight was stopped after the ref noticed that I couldn't stand properly after taking a particularily nasty kick to my calf. Well at the time I assumed it was a torn muscle and so did my coach who gave me a truley agonising deep tissue massage right on the injury to try and get me ready for the next fight. I couldn't really walk on it for a couple of weeks but it felt like it was gradually getting better after that. I returned to training a few ago and it was still giving me some gyp so my coach told me to get an x-ray, I complied and it turns out my fibula (runs parrallel to the shin bone) is broken in half. It's formed a big calcified bubble to draw it back and unify it, so it is on it's way to healing.
    The radiologist has told me that I shouldn't go back to training till it has completely healed, which could be a while. I'm thinking, sod that! I've been back to training and it's been fine apart from aching. Also i'm due to fight a FCR kickboxing bout in a month, a BJJ comp and another Sanda match at the start of April.
    Seeing as it feels okay do you think I should just go with my instincts?

    Injuries like that will come back and haunt you later in life if you dont let them heal. (Just ask my left knee)

    Take the time to rest, let your body get back to even keel and start again. You may even need to get it rebroken and set correctly other wise you could have a nasty limp.

      Training through an injury against medical advice is a really bad idea

      Maybe you could use this time to work your upper body in the gym instead? Maybe swimming would be a good rehab exercise, improve your cardio over this time? Ask your physician, she should be able to guide you.

        Yes when I hurt somewhere of me and it starts to feel bad I never back down,I even train those places more.

        I hurt my knee some time ago and it was giving me pain like hell,I wasnt even able to squat or kneel down.

        I wanted to train "soft" and even tried to not train at all.Cuz it was not a normal pain it was hell.

        So I decided to go very hard on my knees.I always weight trained with my legs etc.

        And they got better and harder than before :D



        But what you talking about is not a simple pain it is serious man.

        I think you should really rest.

        It wouldnt be bravery it would be stupidity If you go harsh right now I think.(no offense)
        You say its ok but "one" position that would go hard on your leg and bang, you are permanent disabled.

          And what happens if you take a kick to that leg while the bones are still trying to reattach to each other? You could end up needing surgery, could end up with a bone chip floating around, all kinds of nasty stuff. Work through small injuries, but ALWAYS take the time for major injuries to completely heal. You want to keep training for years to come right? It's better to take a few weeks or a couple of months off now than to push it and possibly end your career years before it needs to.

            That sounds very serious already, take some time off and let that injury heal properly. Who would kickbox with fractured shins? Need I remind you, "Laugh now, cry later", sure right now it will feel great, but would you want to be limping around forever after this is all said and done?

              We're random strangers on an internet board, and you want to believe us over your highly trained, well-paid doctor? :P

              Don't do it -- I know it seems annoying, but when you get re-injured, you'll be out for EVEN LONGER, with an even worse injury.

                Yeh I know but;

                a) She's not a Kickboxer and as such doesn't know what my training involves.
                b) It really does feel ok.
                c) She didn't tell me what I wanted to hear.
                d) I'm not a poooooossssy.

                Thanks for the concern guys but I really would feel like an idiot for not training when I feel like I can.

                  That was a great leg kick!, I would be proud to be injured by that piece of beauty. But yeah seeing as its your shin I wouldnt. Because either your gonna get into a habit of non checking kicks in fear, or your gonna check to many hard ones and you might get permenent damage. Im sure theres stuff to help you to a speedy recovery though. And you should be fine for the bjj tourney unless theres a sambo madman who tries a calf crush on you.

                    A - no, but she has probably seen LOTS of reinjured bones that permanently fuck someone up because they didn't listen

                    B- Feels OK now, but until the bones are completely set and hardened it is still brittle and weak around that area

                    C - So you came to us, and we pretty much unanimously told you the same thing.

                    D - Not in question at all. It's a broken leg, not a hangnail. But if you're so worried about looking like a pussy that you would risk permanent injury so nobody laughs at you then maybe.......


                    And take it from some of us who have trained a long time and had and seen enough injuries to know what we're talking about. The time off from full training really sucks, but it's better than having to stop completely. And as someone already mentioned, just because you're not going full speed and competing, you don't have to just sit around on your ass all day. There is still plenty of supplemental training you can do until your leg is ready to go.

                      I'd say follow your doctor's advice and let it heal. Re-injuring something is a good way to have chronic pain in that area for the rest of your life, and especially when you get older. You'll be like "why is this huring me??", then remember that injury you never let heal. Its not worth it imo.

                        if you think she doesn't know what she's talking about, then go see a sports med doc.

                        my opinion is that you're being an idiot (you have balls, i'll give you that though.)

                        let your injury heal and listen to your doctor. i used to think like you and now at 37 years old i have a bunch of annoying old injuries that seem to come back at the worst possible times (like right now when i have the chance to train with a great sanda coach and can't cause my old injuries are coming back to haunt me and keep me out of competition.)

                        but hey, i'm not telling you what you want to hear, so go ahead and ignore me. what the hell would i know?

                          yeah, i have to agree with kittery on this one. I am sure we have all seen tough guys training through injuries before. its not pretty when you see them spending 10 mins at the start of every class strapping up joints and doing specialist stretches just so they can get back on the mat, then they still have tomake excuses and 'sit out' anything that is going to aggravate their old war wound.

                          Take the advise offered above. Lay off training for a couple of months til you get the all clear. but use the time wisely- work on your cardio(bike work should be fine, but i would avoid running), swimming, get in the weights bay and work on your body strength, even flexibility work. Then start back stronger and fitter than before.

                          just ask yourself- do you want to be a tough guy now or someone who isnt in constant pain in 10 years time?

                            Read the part in bold again. I train with small injuries all the time, but training with a major injury like a broken bone is just stupid. You'll miss even more training if you hurt it again. Be smart now and allow your body the time it needs to heal.

                            If feel like you can't wait, go see a sports doctor like Ming suggested.

                            Ditto. Listen to the old broken men Cuchulain, we've already made this mistake for you. Otherwise it will take you fifteen minutes to get out of bed in the morning when you get older because you have to massage your knees to get them to function properly. I'm not joking.

                              I know, I know, I've done this before too. But I'm just telling you, eventually I learned that training injured usually leads to me getting injured a lot worse, and then I REALLY have to sit it out.
