They did, in a lot of ways.

The New Testament is the New Covenant (new agreement). Jesus changed a whole lot of old law...what you referenced there about unclean food, the concept of eye for an eye vs turn the other cheek, adultery punishable by stoning vs. let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I'm no biblical scholar, but the NT is almost like a completely different bible...

And the tattoo thing...that's a difference in opinion over ONE line in the bible, but it really is beleived to be referring only to the letting of blood, and pagan cult-like activity. Specifically, the mark of Satan. There are plenty of Christian tattoos out there, and even Christian tattoo studios....

Ezekial 23:20-21 She lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose semen was like that of horses. So she longed to do the sinful things she did when she was young in Egypt, when young men caressed and fondled her breasts.

Anyways, I always find it funny when Christians come up with a bunch of excuses for why what they think is okay is certainly okay, but whatever anyone else thinks might be okay is totally sinfull. You all twist the scriptures to mean whatever it is you want it to mean for whatever time you want it to mean something.

"Oh, tattoos are okay, really! Oh, so is a cheeseburger with a side of lobster! And figbhting! You are taking things out of context and things have changed since the olden days! Oh! But sex is bad and so is homos and you still shouldn't do anything I disaprove of you godless liberals! Now, lets go to war and kill us off some aye-rabs!!"

I think we should go with Ambrose Bierce's version:

            DECALOGUE, n.
A series of commandments, ten in number -- just enough to permit an intelligent selection for observance, but not enough to embarrass the choice. Following is the revised edition of the Decalogue, calculated for this meridian.

Thou shalt no God but me adore:
'Twere too expensive to have more.

            No images nor idols make
            For Robert Ingersoll to break.

Take not God's name in vain; select
A time when it will have effect.

Work not on Sabbath days at all,
But go to see the teams play ball.

            Honor thy parents. That creates
            For life insurance lower rates.

            Kill not, abet not those who kill;
Thou shalt not pay thy butcher's bill.

Kiss not thy neighbor's wife, unless
Thine own thy neighbor doth caress

Don't steal; thou'lt never thus compete
            Successfully in business. Cheat.

Bear not false witness -- that is low --
But "hear 'tis rumored so and so."

Covet thou naught that thou hast not
By hook or crook, or somehow, got.

              WHERE IS THE PASTOR?
              WHERE IS THE PASTOR?
              WHERE IS THE PASTOR?
              WHERE IS THE PASTOR?

This is the problem with people they don't have the perseverance to last through a debate nor can they intelligently present their point of view. While I sit here reading the post associated with this thread it comes to my attention that not many here believe in the written word of the Bible. Which to be honest is a good thing. It means that many of us are intelligent enough to understand the base fact of what makes the Bible wrong. It was written by man and man is flawed.

While we are a nation founded on religious freedom. We are not a nation of religious freedom. Many are condemned and ostracized due to their religion still to this day. Hell the KKK went after Catholics and Jews as well as blacks in the beginning. People still come to your door to get you to convert to their religion. Many of us who can think for ourselves are looked down upon because we do not attend services.

We debate nonsensical matters such as if He lets evil exist or why doesn't He stop it. We are given tales of wonder and suspense to help guide us through trying times. My personally most hateful statement you can say to someone after a tragedy "It was God's will". This nearly causes my head to explode every time I here it. Truth of the matter is that God is what you make of it.

God, Alla, Budda, the Great Spirit, Brahma, Zeus, Odin, Jupiter, Ra or Jesus is the personification of what man would like to be. A great and powerful being that can manipulate and control the world at his whims. Every culture has a supreme being that they think is the bee knees. In all actuality it is what that culture perceives as greatness. We all believe that if we could wield the power of the almighty we could make the world a great place. That being said if God was like that then the world would be a great place. Sadly he is not. God is just the gather conscience of a culture and the need for that group to be thought of as better people. It's wrapped in mysticism and tradition with a touch of dogma.

I believe in a God that is not a being but an idea. He is not worshiped nor praised. He is not blamed for misfortune nor celebrated for victories. He is not a voice in my head but an essence of the universe. He has no powers. He has no thought. He is just there and is the binding force of all things.

Jesus didn't tap, but according to Carlos Gracie Jr he might as well have.

Prove me wrong. Instead of a flippant remark or accusation use your literary talents to establish your argument. Show me the error of my ways.

Yeah it kind of sounds like that but it's an idea professed in deism. Where reasoning and logic is preferred over revelation. Lucas and many others kind of grabbed religious ideas when writing scifi and gave them a different spin here and there to make an enjoyable film.

Incidentally, what does "Jesus didn't tap" actually mean? Seriously. The aphorism seems to suggest that one shouldn't tap, but what is gained from that. And how did Jesus not tap; in what situation was he in that some metaphorical tapping could have occurred?

As a slogan, it seems rather silly and empty to me. What is the idea expressed in the slogan?
