How good are you at fighting, really?

I was talking to a buddy from training the other night about the false sense of competency a lot of people get after just a few months training. I see a lot of guys who think they are a lot tougher than they actually are, until they realise (usually due to an embarrassing beating they take either in training or on t3h s7R337s) how much further they have to go.

    The conversation raised some questions for me;

How "good" a fighter are you (on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being Elite/Professional caliber)?

How "good" a fighter do the people you train with think you are (on the same scale)?

How "good" a fighter do other people who you don't train with think you are?

If this score is higher than the other two (and let's be honest here in many cases it would be) do you encourage it?

This may be a case of: :deadhorse but I'm genuinely curious.

How "good" a fighter are you (on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being Elite/Professional caliber)?

I'd rate myself about a 6.5 Maybe 7 if I was "tougher"/More aggressive. I'm confident that I can defend myself quite easily against an untrained individual of my weight or a little larger, and that I can hold my own against someone with a reasonable degree of skill/experience. I still get tooled by the "good" fighters I've rolled/sparred with.

How "good" a fighter do the people you train with think you are (on the same scale)?

The less experienced people probably rate me around an 8 (mostly because I'm very calm and don't really get flustered, which they may mistake for competence IMO). The more experienced guys probably rate me around a five. Competent, but not aggressive enough.

How "good" a fighter do other people who you don't train with think you are?
    8.
:adora:"Wow, you do that UFC stuff? That's crazy man!! I wouldn't mess with this guy"

If this score is higher than the other two (and let's be honest here in many cases it would be) do you encourage it?

No, I don't. I don't really talk about MA with friends unless they train too, but the more I self-deprecate, the more people think I am being "humble".

:adora:"Dude, you've been training for ages, and you're there all the time. You must be a badass by now..." :eusa_wall

Having said that, I probably am a little half-hearted when I deny my baddassery, to be honest. But I'm only human.

    So how about you?

I suck. When I was still doing striking stuff I had a bad tendency to flinch and sometimes close my eyes when a punch was thrown at me. During Judo randori my kuzushi sucks, and I can only throw people significantly lighter and less experienced than me. My claim to fame in BJJ is that I can usually prevent a BJJ blue belt from subbing me for maybe a minute.

    On the scale of 1-10 I'm probably a 2 or 3.

      Thanks for your honesty.

So how good do your training partners think you are?

what about your friends outside of training?

I'd give myself a three, and only in the striking department. I don't have any training in anything else, and really, I just feel that I'm a bit better than your average computer geek who sits at his computer. At least, I'm sure I could whip him.....

Not sure where I would put myself on a scale but if you come after me, I am going to mess you up. Is that what's actually going to happen? I have no clue whatsoever. But, that is how I'm going to approach the situation until proven otherwise.

Most of them probably think I'm a 3 or 4. The problem is that I'm practicing at a university Judo club with student instructors. Predictibly, as the semester goes on, they started to disappear, and I ended up as the guy with the most experience. :disgust:

I also do great against untrained opponents. Especially ones that are smaller and weaker than me, but I do poorly against opponents who bigger, stronger, and more skilled than me. I would rate myself a 10 against the girls gymnastics class that comes after my BJJ class but only a 2 in the actual BJJ class.

                  I once won a 6 on 1 fight.

Boy, we really kicked the shit out of that guy.

Threads like this are trainwrecks. Very few people will rate themselves objectively.
Shut the hell up and train.

                      you're right.

Believe it or not, though I am genuinely curious.

My expectation was that there would probably be about 40% of overly modest posts, 40% humorous, and if I'm lucky, maybe one in every 5 or so that are legit.

                        Lol, nice.

Hmmm... I wish I had more experiance with people outside of my school for this. I am going to give myself a 6. I can challenge, and maybe beat, some of the black belts; which would rate me higher then that. But I no there are limits to my sparring, so that seems appropriate. (Least accurate for sure)

People I train with, 8. Pretty much explained above.

Other people? 10, but this is not my fault. So last year I ran through the USKA tournaments up to nationals (Point sparring, but just so you know in my dojo we go close to full, continous, and none of the stupid rules like no elbows) and got second (I really should have had first, it was tied up both one point away from winning, and I hit the guy in the head and nocked him over, but I didn't get the fucking point, all on video)

The real kicker was I was in the second highest skill level and only 14-15 age group (I am 16 now) but I am really tall and much better then those kids. So really, it turned out to be sadly easy. Somehow, my band instructer go wind of my second place in nationals and told everyone in the 150+ band at one practice. They just all think "He is the second best karate fighter in the nation?" not understand how untrue that is. So I have a reputation in there as being a crazy fighter (Which is partly true, I could beat anyone in there in a fight for sure). Without me actually telling anyone anything or fighting anyone. I do occasionally abuse this reputation, but not to much.

Plus I have a body build that looks just like bruce lee, eight pack and all. (Band camp = no shirt)

I'd probably rate myself a 4 in all ranges.

My training partners would rate me a 4 aswell.

People I don't train with probably don't think I'm very good either, because if they ask what I do I just say wrestling, and alot of people still haven't realized that it's the shizzle.

My girlfriend and her hot mates think i'm the baddest cos I can throw and submit some of my friends, so as long as they don't see any actual good fighters i'm golden.

8 (1 year i almost made it to the Russian Olympic Team but wasn't quite good enough + it is a while back so not quite elite)

8 (Hard to guess since i now train with a world champion and other US Olympians so not quite sure what they really think of me, but I do menage to hold my on in randori, sometimes even more)

Ps. That is if we are refering to Judo, I never did MMA and have no clue how I would do there (no immediate desire to fing out either)
