I was talking to a buddy from training the other night about the false sense of competency a lot of people get after just a few months training. I see a lot of guys who think they are a lot tougher than they actually are, until they realise (usually due to an embarrassing beating they take either in training or on t3h s7R337s) how much further they have to go.
The conversation raised some questions for me;
How "good" a fighter are you (on a scale from 1-10, with 10 being Elite/Professional caliber)?
How "good" a fighter do the people you train with think you are (on the same scale)?
How "good" a fighter do other people who you don't train with think you are?
If this score is higher than the other two (and let's be honest here in many cases it would be) do you encourage it?
This may be a case of: :deadhorse but I'm genuinely curious.
I'd rate myself about a 6.5 Maybe 7 if I was "tougher"/More aggressive. I'm confident that I can defend myself quite easily against an untrained individual of my weight or a little larger, and that I can hold my own against someone with a reasonable degree of skill/experience. I still get tooled by the "good" fighters I've rolled/sparred with.
The less experienced people probably rate me around an 8 (mostly because I'm very calm and don't really get flustered, which they may mistake for competence IMO). The more experienced guys probably rate me around a five. Competent, but not aggressive enough.
8.
:adora:"Wow, you do that UFC stuff? That's crazy man!! I wouldn't mess with this guy":rolleyes:
No, I don't. I don't really talk about MA with friends unless they train too, but the more I self-deprecate, the more people think I am being "humble".
:adora:"Dude, you've been training for ages, and you're there all the time. You must be a badass by now..." :eusa_wall
Having said that, I probably am a little half-hearted when I deny my baddassery, to be honest. But I'm only human.
So how about you?
