I think the OP is trying to spare us all the disappointment of learning that the protagonist did no survive his attempt to get into cage fighting.

The brilliance of the narrative was not just in how for many of us it hit our own embarrassing personal experiences, but also how well it portrayed the actual cult-like self-indoctrination that does take place.
