When I was in the Aus' army, the basic training was hard, damn hard. No matter where in the army you came from, because not everyone did it (officers, apprentices etc...), you got respect for doing something not everyone could make it through. A lot has changed in twenty years.
I met a WC fella who was training military personal in Victoria barracks. He'd been to Thailand and fought some Thai boxers over there. If I can find his web site, it even says so on there. Turns out he got pretty much forced to jump in the ring and then got boo'd off. He's a really nice fella, but as far as MA skilz go, I'd feel quite safe around him.....if he were trying to attack me.

If you need to know, he's one of Billy Cheungs mob.

Still, it's gotta be better than SCARS :-)
