What brought you to Bullshido?

It's funny how a lot of specialty focus forums like Gamefaqs and ocau etc.. have subforums dedicated to cars and martial arts. I personally can't stand talking in them because they are usually filled with idiots, expecially the "IT" forums on non-IT boards. Actually the ocau.mc board is quite knowledgeable but that is an exception to the rule.

I came here initially because I was inheriting a TMA club at a college and wanted to be sure I didn't cause it to become a mcdojo (and I kind of enjoyed some of the reviews of schools and teachers, mostly because I wanted to feel better about what I was doing). Later, I met someone who had done karate, BJJ and a few other things, and he utterly outclassed me on the mat. He was also a fan of the site, so I looked more closely at what folks here were saying about how/what to train.

I started trying to teach ground fighting and realized through the folks at Bullshido that I didn't really know how to teach it in a way that would be useful to students. I found a Judo/BJJ school, started training there, started bringing in outside folks (BJJ and Boxing teachers) to train the club and learned who Matt Thornton was. Long story short, the club I oversee is now a Straight Blast Gym Affiliated Training Group.

I decided that I didn't want to be a lazy fuck anymore and thought doing Kung Fu would be cool and it would turn me into a badass. Well I joined a Kung Fu place and they said they did wing chun. I searched for wing chun and I think on page 3 of the google search it had the bullshido review of it. I read it and thought hmm maybe they know something. I posted in newbie town and virus told me the kung fu place was everything bullshido fought against. I pulled my head out of my ass and joined a mma gym. Now I realize I will never be a badass but atleast I won't be deluded into thinking I am one.

I want to hear more posts about your friend ... just don't get rushed ... take your time and document what you can then start a YMAS thread about it . Give it as couple weeks then weed out the Garbage and then start a MABS thread about it .

Um, you do know that there are several options available to you here in River City. There's the cleverly named "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Spokane" (www.bjjspokane.com). TKO Fighting Arts (www.tkokickboxing.com) runs an MMA and kickboxing program. The Spokane Boxing Club has a fledgling MT and MMA club. And there's a couple good (and cheap) Judo Clubs including the Pacific Judo Club and the Spokane Judo Club.

KempoFist sent me a link on MAP to join Bullshido. I do crack up a lot at some of the posts though I do find I can't stomach everything on this site (LLL!).

Plus I found that Japanese MA style forum was of a much higher quality than MAP's.

I can't remember how I found the site in the first place, but the articles on aliveness confirmed my fears about th3 de4dly moves of combat hapkido, so I looked high and low for a judo or bjj school within reasonable distance, found a bjj/mma school, and have been happily tapping to guys half my size ever since

I posted on MAP for a long time (I still do), and got gradual exposure to Bullshido from that. Ironically, unlike so many ex-MAPpers, I wasn't driven away by the ninjutsu/qi gong/spooky mysticism bullshit (I never went into the ninjutsu forum, so that helped). I just decided to check out Bullshido. It made appreciate applying the scientific method to martial arts. The YMAS month videos and the like were also a big draw :p.
