    OH NOES!!! NOT BOXING!

Right so I found a prospective boxing gym. http://www.millenniumcentre.co.uk/
Not a clue how good it is but they offer a free session so I can find out. However im 16 and therefore dependant on parents for a lift and fees. I know many of you are parents so please help me out here. How do you convince parents who see the pro boxers with faces like battered potatoes that boxing is not going to give me brain damage and destroy what beauty I possess?

If I were you I wouldn't do boxing, but hey whatever :P

Uhh, just tell them that the dangers of boxing are exaggerated (which isn't entirely false). Or something. Once they get over the hump of allowing their kid to fight other kids, they'll probably be supportive, unless you don't get any better, but that's your problem :P. It's taken me a while to convince my parents that UFC isn't just wanton violence, and that it's actually wanton violence with finesse.

My folks wouldn't let me box when I was a kid. I had to make my own money and ride the bus to the gym. Once your folks have their minds made up about the issue, I doubt they're going to change it.

just tell them that its either a gym or you are going to start with the street bums. dont forget to mention that street bums have HIV and like to bite. this is what I did and my parents bought me a car to get to training!

Simple. Show them pictures of TaeKwanDo guys and such like who THiNK they know how to fight AFTER their first street fight.

They'll quickly do an about turn on the issue

Remind them that you were an accident. Easy come, easy go.

Oh yeah, you could also get into fights at school a lot and lose.

Truthfully, you would probably get stuck with a lot of pad work and defensive drills anyway untill you can prove you're ready for full sparing. I started boxing 5 months ago and the only damage I've seen is when the local kickboxing club comes in to season thier fighters for tournaments. Mostly bloody noses, mostly the kick boxers.
I've taken more damage doing Kyokushin.

Apparently there is not a snowballs chance in hell. I'm not going to give up just yet.

Ure in Suffolk... duznt thT meen ure parentz iz also ure brother n sister?
Tell thm u'll report them 2 social servicez unless they play ball.
                      I mean ply bll.

Seriously, I'd focus on the fact you'll be doing more conditioning work and technique work than actual sparring. They won't know that isn't exactly true.
                      Unless they're reading this.

You might try asking them to check the place out and talk with the coaches about any concerns they have. "Mom, Dad, at least check the place out with your own eyes," seems like a valid request. If the place teaches teenagers they've probably dealth with concerned parents before and know the right things to say.

With your luck, of course, they'll show up the exact moment some poor fucker gets his jaw broken, but at least you tried.

My webbed toes hate you. Wait what? I tried explaining that it will just be footwork and I would never ever be punched but no negotiation is available.

Believe me, unless you're pursuing a career in pro boxing, or are national level, you're not going to suffer any facial or mental damage, unless you are sticking your chin out with your hands scratching your ass.

Of course, as with most parents, they love you very much and do not want you to get hurt. That's the hardest part to convince. You could always purposely get KTFOed in TKD and then see where that takes you.

Get a job to pay for it yourself and then bus to the gym or something. Thats what I did when I was 16 and wanted to box.
