I agree with the combative sports argument, it is the best way to train for a martial art. However there is the possibility that TMAs did work at one time before becoming calcified, rigid and believing their own myths, in particular that small, slow and weak can be the deadly.

Once upon a time people did actually use these arts for fighting. The level of competition was probable not very high and almost any training would have been a huge advantage against peasants, merchants and other citizenry. Especially those brought up in a culture where resisting authority of any kind was forbidden. In addition culture plays a role in how one behaves during a fight, and what the acceptable techniques are. This is true even in the combative sports arena. Boxing for example, while an awesome striking system, has lost some techniques that were common in bare knuckle fights and added others due to the addition of large gloves and the removal of standing grappling skills.

Striking in MMA is probably closer bare knuckle boxing (BKB) that it is to modern ring boxing because the rules are closer to how a BKB fight would have been fought.
I think you would see a revolution in boxing skills if they moved to the MMA glove and allowed grabbing and fighting out of the clinch, even without kicks or throws.

Personally I see _ing __un as a Chinese reaction to bare knuckle fighting brought into southern China by foreign sailors in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is interesting to see how it and modern boxing have diverged from a common ancestor and how MMA is applying modern training and science while returning boxing to its roots.

Yeh, I reckon that makes more sense. It's much easier to find decent boxers and kickboxers that will happily spar then it is to find a wing chun varient practitoner that will throw down.
