    Your Opinions on:

I thought I'd make a thread to get everyones opinions on various aspects of martial arts, their effectiveness, and your experience with these. If you could put the teachers you learned from as well, it'd be a great help. I've had experience in most of these, and I'm not asking anyone what they are, or how they work, however I am merely attempting to gauge the general opinion on these topics.

So, what are your opinions and experiences (if any), when it comes to:

    :Wooden Dummies

:Weight Training (In regards to Fight Application)

    :Knife "Fighting"

    :Jeet Kune Do

:Wing Chun (Yuen Kay San or Gu-Lao, none of the other lineages)

    :Chi Sao & Chi Gerk

    :Push Hands

:Supplements (In regards to Fight Application)

3 years or so Yip Man->Moy Yat -> Chen (Chan? I can't remember) lineage Wing Chun. Yes, the truth comes out!

Fun toy to bang around and make noise and cooler than a heavy bag, weight training is so necessary to build muscles to bash people and prevent injury, knife fighting is overrated and in terms of RBSD they should never even see your knife it should already be in their back bahahahahahah ninja strike!, JKD is theory made up by Bruce Lee there is no one anyone can actually teach a martial art that is really a philosophy, Wing Chun is filled with silliness like the goat stance and politics and sil lim tao and seeking bridges and darting finders you should do something else, chi gerk is cool looking but not thrillingly useful and you are better off with a strong base and footwork movement, chi sao is a great drill for gaining sensitivity but is an over-focused part of Wing Chun and it is has been said also by many 'Wing Chun' masters that _ing __un stylists should focus more on entry level range instead of chi sao range, push hands is good for balance but again is overrated and you really should take wrestling or judo instead, supplements are just supplements so this should be understood that these are only small parts of your training additionally be aware that most supplements on the market today are overpriced and you would be better off saving money for that cost.

I typed all that without taking a breathe!

Knife "Fighting:" only when you have a knife and your opp doesn't

                          Wing Chun - looks pretty

Sparring a real-life opponent is God, regardless of the style and training aids, in my opinion. I think the more time you spend in the ring with different people styles, the more you adapt and the better you become.

Unfortunately, a good chunk of my training is done by myself, due to my schedule and whatnot so I am always interested in wasy to improve what I do.

I've used a bunch of training aids, ranging from a styrofoam head hanging on a rope to a middle bag. I've kind of decided they all have their limited benefits. I'm sure even the wooden dummy can be used for something besides a coat rack (maybe you could hang a focus mitt on the different limbs?). In fact, I was tinkering around with a makiwara board a few weeks ago and saw some benefit.

I'm sure I've said nothing of benefit to you so what the hell. I'm going to click the reply button anyway. Deal with it. Then I think I'll go do the "search" myself like a good little bullshidist.

                              wooden dummies : no opinion

weight training : go for it if you got the time

knife work : can be fun. I'd recommend learning it through stick fighting.

                              jkd : dunno

wing chun : dunno really. All I know about it I learned on youtube

                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw1hqx2gVII
                              http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0eb3eM14rI

chi sao : I like it, actually. I've never done chi sao as specific to wing chun but more like a fun 'tag' drill. I've used it as a warm up.

                              push hands : no clue

                              supplements : protein powder works.
