    New To The Board

I've been a long time reader of this site, so I decided to join. Right now I'm in a transition between choosing a new art. I've been doing Aikido for the past 4 years, and I've never been more depressed in my life. Thanks to bullshido, I've known I've been bullshidoed...

    Thanks....

There's a MMA school in Philly run by Brad Daddis, I'm thinking on checking that out. I mean with Aikido, it's more philosophy and less martial aspect. This has been brewing for a while, but I've finally got the mindset and info to go for a change. This board has been really insightful and helpful.

I live in SJ/S. Philly area, so I'm searching.....However, alot of TKD, TSD, and anything else I'd have to go to North Jersey.

Good on you for honestly evaluating the limits of your training and admiting its shortcomings. Many, many people do not do this.

To prevent this from happening again in 3 years, ignore the TKD/hapkido/TSD/krotty. Look for one of the "MMA 5" - boxing, muai-thai, judo, BJJ, wrestling. They're out there, I promise, so keep looking. Call local colleges for clubs, call community centers, gyms, and country clubs to see if they rent out space.

Check the throwdown section for one in your area. Even if you don't go you should be able to make some school contacts.

I'm from Philly. I had a decision to make for what BJJ school I would attend. Here is the thread http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...t=Philadelphia Both Balance Studios and Maxercise are great schools for BJJ. Both have MMA classes (I think Max does anyway, Balance definately does) though they are more of an addon then a reall MMA course. Both have excellent BJJ programs and Maxercise has Judo as well.

As an update I still have to de-program myself from Aikido philosophy. It was just a point it reached with the LARPing, swords, staff, and all that stuff is really irrelevant to me
in today's world of MA. I'm not going into a battlefield yielding a katana, so why should I practice for it? The only Aikido guys I rolled with who could throw down were the guys who cross-trained in BJJ and Kickboxing and THEN did Aikido. I felt depressed with Aikido because I felt I was living a lie, the non-resistance, yok, sho, tsuki, and crazy collar grabs that are implemented were just simply ridiculous and beyond unrealistic. Then there's this whole ego trip with most of the Yudansha who think they are Yoda in the flesh, their hakama can't hold all that ego can it? I feel a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders since leaving Aikido and I will now venture into the world of BJJ/MT...

                Also Aikido teaches:
                Competition is bad
                Strength is bad
Ego is bad (yet most Aikidoist have an ego the size of Jupiter)
Aikido can train you for any attack (even though you've never trained for an attack set)
Sword and Staff (People use guns today, so no need for this)

Welcome to the site of the light, Helio be with you. By the way, have you decided where to train? Did you end up going with Daddis? I've heard he's the real deal, although I haven't trained with him personally.

That school is closer to me, so I will be heading there very soon.

                      Sith_Lord,

I know Steve Maxwell, and he is an excellent martial artist and teacher.
He also had a Judo class there as well, the last time I was there.

Welcome to Bullshido. Don't sweat it. 4 years of Larping is nothing, some of us acted retarded for a lot longer.

                          http://www.philadelphiajiujitsu.com

Still shopping around, but what about this place? ^^

Also maxercise on Chestnut offers a good rate and class times.

phillymma is a bit pricey for the Philly location and/or the Cherry Hill location only offers a few classes a week.

I'm just paranoid about taking another MA because I don't want to be in another cult like I was with Aikido.

Any info or advice would be helpful.
