    Best gi for your money?

I tried to search for anything related to this topic but 'Gi' is too short to search for.

I am having trouble finding a decent BJJ gi to train in. I just started training and I don't have a lot of money to throw around. I am looking for a reasonably priced gi that will last me awhile until I can save up for a better gi. I don't care about looks/patches etc... I just want something that isn't going to fall apart after three classes.

Can you guys point me to some cheap gis that are made well and also some higher end gis that are worth the higher price that I will be eventually getting? Thanks.

Everyone has suggested gis that are really expensive for me right now ($130.00+). And they seem to act like anything less wouldn't last very long. So that is why I am asking you guys. Are there any gis in the $60-$80 dollar range that will last for a while and are well made?

And I bought the gi I am using right now second hand from a friend for cheap because I am broke.

Their shipping usually runs around 7.50 cents for shipping a Gi...Good luck, and stick with it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Have you used their gis before?

I got an adidas conquest Judo gi for my bjj/judo classes. It was pretty cheap and it seems to hold up pretty good.

I ordered from kodokan gear. Under $90 shipped I recall for a size 7. I think I made a thread about it a few months back that you can dig up.

HA...ummmm...that would be my old school. Never heard of the brand names on the Gi's my instructor sold but there was a 50/50 chance they would shred like cray paper. Unless you ordered the friggen double weave Gi which would literally stand on its own like a suit of armor.

Try a Mizuno Single Weave. They're relatively cheap and very good quality.

if your instructor has a wholesale account with century, you can get a decent judo gi cheap. i believe my single weave was $35 three years ago, and i still wear the top twice a week. mind the sizing, though... century has weird ideas about stuff like that. and don't pay retail.

I got gis from both hatashita (as mentioned previously) and Juka Dragon. The Dragon gis are a bit more expensive, but I was able to get one for $48.

I would not recommend the OP to get one of those double weave gis that cost $150+ (some of those puppies seem to go over $200), specially if he is just starting. Those gis can last forever, but he won't be in a need for those right now... perhaps if he goes to tourneys.

I got a total of 4 gis, 3 hatashita and 1 Juka dragon, 3 of those with a lose fit (as they like it in Judo) and one that shrinked (too small for Judo but still ok for bjj). All of those had a total cost of like $220 (I bought them one at a time.) This way I always have a clean gi at hand (a courtesy to whoever rolls with me, plus it's just hygienic common sense.

For the OP, get a pair of cheap hatashita gis. That should cost less than $100, and are decent, durable gis. Another possibility that I never explored was to buy just the jacket on ebay.

If I could go back in time, I would have bought just 3 to 4 jackets and only 1 to 2 pants. The pants can be washed overnight and will dry and be ready for usage the next morning.

The gi jacket, on the other hand, takes a lot longer to dry (specially in a humid enviroment like Florida where I live.) I could have saved money while still being able to have a clean, washed gi ready.

Oh well, just some food for though on matters of saving money :)

Agreed. I only have two a single weave and a MK Hybrid. Better to just buy extra tops to allow for line-dry time.

Atama gold weaves are your answer. I own two and just recently retired the first one when the knees and collar started shredding. For $100 (with excellent shipping) they took two years of constant abuse.

I will also recommend Sirius gis. They are nice and run about a 100 US. They are narrow around the wrists so don't get it for competing unless you are a skinny bastard. I hear good things about Howard Combat (my next purchase) as far as durability and it is a more relaxed fit.

If its Judo gis, Mizuno/Kusakura/Mitsuboshi are the best that I have seen (Japanese brands cause I'm in Japan). Mizuno washes well and the blood comes out well.

I just got a single and a double from these guys:

                              http://www.judoinfo.com/HSU/

I haven't had them long enough to rate them firsthand, but everyone at the judo club I drop in at wears them and gets some longevity from them and the double feels really solid with nice thick lapels. I like them for the aforementioned laundry reasons - they are really cheap and I rotate them with an Atama single weave and a disintegrating Tiger Claw (gi is shit, but it's soft and comfy for use at the dojo - especially when you feel like defending collar chokes all night).

My Atama single has seen 1-3 classes / week for over a year and is in good shape. Ran about $70 I think.
