    Advice on what to take

Well first I would like to say hello. I am new to this forum and hope to post here in the future. But I had an important question. I want to find a martial art that I like, and I don't know the first way in looking up what I might like. Seeing how many different martial arts do many different things.

I am a big guy, and I DON'T like kicking. I want to make that apparent. Knees I like, but round house and flying round house kicks are out of the question. Axe kicks and things that make me kick over my head are very uncomfortable for me and do not like them. I am also looking for something that is mainly striking, and maybe joint locks. Not big on wrestling, even though using my size is a big advantage. I was thinking about taking hapkido, but I don't really know anything about it. Also I have taken the fallowing martial arts:

Tae Kwan Do (I hated it, the punches were too slow and way to many kicks. Not a big fan.)
Judo (Not enough striking for my taste, also after taking Aikido the falls were really bad form)
Aikido (I liked this one, very smooth. But not really what I am looking for. But I intend on taking this again in the future. Perhaps after I am done with one that will get me more in shape and train my strikes.)

I hope you guys can give me some insight.

My advice to you is to start drinking... heavily...

Look through the website and get an idea of what styles are bullshido and what are not then find some schools in your area of the different styles and go try them out. Typically schools offer at least one free class.

It may be just me, but I'd say judo's breakfalls are pretty darn good...oh, blah, who am I kidding, nothing looks as pretty with aliveness. And those Magic Pants...dead sexy.

If you're intent on learning a striking art but you're dead set on not learning how to roundhouse kick, I'd suggest you take MacWombat's advice and try out boxing. Sorry, but since you said you didn't like wrestling (and thus I assume you don't like groundwork in general), ground joint locks are pretty much out, and standing joint locks suck the big one in general.

I'm sure you could try hapkido, but you should do a search on the site and read up on what people have said about it.

        Welcome to Bullshido.

Anything that involves fully resisting opponents beating the crap out of you.

          This does not include Aikido.

Dude, you are all over the place looking for the fabled pink unicorn. You ain't gonna find it. Since you don't like kicking and not a big fan of wrestling and judo (the logically-grounded reasons of which escapes me), just go for boxing. Want locks? Then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) or Judo. I know people beat aikido and sanuces jiu-jitsu here and there, but I've already met a few aikidoka/sjj'ers that can break some shit if they want to (though they crosstrain with Judo/BJJ or have a background in it.) I would not discount the later two, but BJJ and Judo seem like safer choices when it comes to avoiding less than optimal schools... to put it mildly.

Anways, you are not going to find the one art that is alive and worth a penny out of your pocket that will give you exactly and precisely the techniques you are looking for. That's a fable, a urban myth.

My suggestion is to take on boxing, or hey, how about an MMA/Vale Tudo class? That would be good for you. Later add on Judo, BJJ or some other JJ derivative that spars in an effective manner. That would give you striking and locks (somewhat), without kicking (I still can't understand that. :icon_scra:)

You gotta try these options and make a decision. If you still don't like those, I'm affraid you are chasing a fantasy. Nothing really wrong with that so long as you know what you can expect or not expect from it.

            Good luck.

Find an MMA gym. You should be able to get whatever you want of it and it should open your eyes to all the stuff you need too.

no high kicks - check...(well, there are, but they are not a must from what I have seen)
                  knees are good - check...
                  no throwing - check...
                  mainly striking - check...
need aliveness to get my ass regularly kicked - check...

hmmmm, sounds like muay thai; or take out the legs entirely and do boxing.

                  Welcome.

                    Gun-fu

Seriously, Boxing is the only striking art I can think of with no kicks.

Boxing with Greco Roman wrestling - then you have upper body strikes, some clinch/upper body throws, and almost no ground work.

I used to think judo breakfalls were bad compared to what I learned in aikido. That was until I started getting throw by guys who were trying to hurt me. Now I perfer judo breakfalls to aikido falls.

kicking is uncomfortable for you? you don't like grappling? boo fucking hoo. if you want to train in something effective, you don't get to put conditions on it. I don't especially like mat burns, doing hip escape drills until I vomit, getting tossed on my head/choked/joint locked, or squirming around with big sweaty guys ... but those are the breaks. there are a handful of styles of recognized effectiveness, and every one of them is going to require you to swim through a river of shit you don't like. deal with it, or take up golf or croquet or something else that won't upset your sensibilities.

Thanks guys for posting. It's not that I don't like ground work. I got lots of that when I used to wrestle in high school. And I just got tired of it, I am seriously considering boxing. But I don't want to be dead set on it. It's not that I don't like kicks, I just don't like kicks that are aimed for the head or above the waist. But thanks guys, I looked up Hapkido stuff and it seems to me it's like a mixture of many different martial arts. And it doesn't look like I will be taking it. I'm also going to start taking tai chi, and thanks for your input. I appreciate it a great deal. I also think boxing would be a good workout, and I think it would be fun. Also I do fully intend to take Aikido again, just later.

then don't throw kicks above your waist.
