Like anything in life, there is ALWAYS someone better, faster, stronger,
    more intelligent etc etc.

All we can do is suppliment and improve our position to increase our
    chances of survival.

With regards to Wing Chun (or any other style of 'self defence') it gives
you the basic tools with which to start your learning.

The more you train the better you become, but NEVER trick yourself into
thinking you are the best !

Wing Chun as far as I understand it, was developed for the purposes
of Self Defence and aimed primarily at travelling Nuns.

    First Rule of self defence;

    Run!

If you can't run then you need to be as effective as possible
with least amount of effort when it comes to defending youself.

And this is, where I believe Wing Chun is coming from.

All the traditional mumbo jumbo is the 'ART' that goes along with
the application of training methods to get you into a more tuned state of being.

Until you get put into a position where you need to react for real. You will
NEVER be able know how effective your 'style/art' really is.

It is almost impossible to recreate a realistic street fighting scenario
    in the gym/classroom.
I personally would not want to see how effective my eye gouging technique really is!
To be really effective it has to be instant and unrelenting. Therefore unpracticeable!
But you ARE going to use it if you have to, in order to defend yourself.

With regards to the 'McDojo' scenario, one of life's 2 main motivators is money!
    (the other being sex).

Not very often in this life are you going to something for nothing. Some schools
are more unscrupulous than others. But they are all there to to cover
their expenses if not to make a profit.

My tip to anyone would be never to pay for anything too far in advance.

In summary, anyone who says/thinks that WING CHUN can provide them with
everything they might need, is wrong!

What it can give you, are the basics. It can help you develop a sense of
control, patience and willingness to share strength hope and experience.

    (That sounds Gay! )

You would not be reading or posting here if you had not first learned
    the alphabet.

You learn to read and write in School. You learn to swear on the Street!

If you do get into a fight you ARE going to get hurt!

    Sweet Jebus!!!

DTT video proves beyond any doubt that _ing_un can be taught for practical application and can be used for hard contact sparring and competition with out killing the other person.

Deosn't mean that WC is great, doesn't mean it's goin to take the MMA world by storm. But it proves that the main reason so many WC people suck is because of lame excuses and justification of not training their art properly, with aliveness, resistence and sparring

Your hippified - for the street, learn to fight so I don't have to fight stuff is what make WV/VT/Wt or whatever you call it crap. It's just more self justification for sub par training.

Watch the video, and see people who can use this stuff in a sporting scenario.

Chances are they can use it on the street 100X better than you because of that training.

Wait, so to be effective, I have to train impractically?

The idea that someone would have to fight for the right to teach non-asians MA is just mildly bizarre. There were a wide number of chinese people teaching kung-fu to non-asians already at that time. BL did not break any new ground.

Like many MA instructors, I am sure that BL received challanges at his school, he was fairly famous and people probably wanted to find out how good he was.

And on the other part of this thread. BL only received partial __ing __un training and this was part of what forced him to supliment with cross-training in other styles. He was completely correct. __ing __un as a stand alone style is incomplete and does hold to many fixed positions. But it's not as bad as someone who has only trained some of the knock off versions might think.
I think that if an angel appeared and told you that Wing Chun was not realistic you would not believe it. Oh well, I suspect your identity is tied to the style and it would hurt you to admit that it is bullshido.
Maybe someday you will get in a real fight and try some Wing Chun and find our for yourself.
