    BJJ in Philadelphia

Okay, so I never actually introduced myself so I figure I'll do that while asking members a question. I'm a 19 year old (from Westchester NY) college student attending St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. I took Relson Gracie Jiu-jitsu over the summer for three months with Mike Casey. I really liked it and wanted to continue my training here. He recommended two schools: Maxercise (run by Steve Maxwell) and Balance Studios (run by the Migliarese brothers). http://www.maxercise.com and http://www.balancestudios.net

I haven't visited Balance Studios yet, but plan to sometime this week. I went to a free class at Maxercise (not the free introductory class, but a real one) and really enjoyed it. The schedule is different than on the website because they are in a temporary location which is supposedly half to 1/3 the size of the place they will be moving into. Anyway they also have an "MMA" class on thursdays which I cannot comment on as I have not seen it. The commute was much easier than I expected and I was pleased about that. After the free class I thought I was set because there was no way that Balance could be that close commute wise anyway. Unfortunately, it's actually a little closer.

Now obviously, I still have to visit Balance Studios to make any decision, but I'm worried that they will both be equal. I am interested in MMA so if Balance didn't offer anything like that, that might make my decision easier. I'll also be contacting my instructors in NY for further advise. However, any advise you Bullshido members could give me would be greatly appreciated. I just want the best training. BJJ first and MMA secondary I guess. Hopefully my trip to Balance will enable me to make a decision (based on me liking it a lot more or a lot less), but any advise would be greatly appreciated (you can give it before I go as I'll take it into consideration after I attend a class).

Note: I heard there was some falling out between Maxwell and the Migliareses but I really don't care about politics. I just want the best training. Also, both schools will be typical GJJ pricing, so 5 bucks a month here or there will not make a difference to me. Thanks guys.

I dont know about the schools but, Noah Spear, from Balance got me into BJJ years ago ( he was a purple then) and trained me for little to nothing. he is a badass and a great teacher and person. If I still lived in philly I would train where ever he is.

I would add Jared Weiner at www.bjjunited.com to the list of places to train too. He's a Lloyd Irvin black belt and a great competitior and more importantly a great instructor too. Not that you can go wrong at Maxercise or Balance either. I know people from all 3 teams and consider them friends.

DON'T GIVE ME MORE CHOICES, JESUS WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!

Edit: Nevermind, that commute's harder. I don't want to give my self another choice so I'm going to not look at it based on that. Thanks though.
