About BJJ (I'm not gonna resist the power of grappling anymore)

I was looking for a BJJ school to polish off my spare time with, and found an academy nearby. Now comes the question - are non bjj.org dojos good training places as well? Or are the only legit ones registered on that site?

See who the instructor has his belt from and search the forum or google for him, or search for your instructor. BJJ.org is a little behind on the updates.

BJJ.org is not a valid resourse for determining if a given school is legit. Who is the instructor? What is his belt and who is it from?

      Does (did) he compete?

Does his school train for grappling competitions? How do his students do?

          http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/f...fighterid=1305

I know you are new, but did you try to google his name? The guy is listed on Sherdog, has a fight record, and is a known commodity.

Yes my friend already told me about him and his awesomeness

But I'm not sure how to look up the school itself.

You mean the website for it?

That would be the first google hit on his name, with Sherdog being the seoncd.

              http://www.serrajitsu.com/

Better to go down there and try a class.

Don't walk, run to train there. Consider yourself lucky to have a place like that near you.

Then watch tonights episode of TUF on Spike and see who Matt Serra is.

Matt Serra's gym, Ray Longo's gym, are two places on Long Island, NY that's great place to train.

For BJJ, there is no place better than Serra's gym on Long Island.

edit: if your dad is footing the bill. shouldn't be a prob for BJJ.
