They call this jumping into the fire....

Greetings all, I have been lurking on this site for a few months now and have decided to join the fray. I am 26 and joining the martial arts after having been a fan for years.

I am currently practicing Tomiki Aikido (please hold the hate until the end of the post) and looking towards starting BJJ in July.

Tomiki Aikido is the only form of Aikido that has competition/sparring (zomg!), using a system similar to Judo. The reason for this is that Tomiki was a direct student of both Kano and Ueshiba and so this Aikido has Judo in its blood. We do Aikido techniques, not Tachi Waza (not a judoka so forgive any butchery) but we take Judo falls and competition is full force resistance.

I can evangelize Tomiki Aikido but the fact of the matter is I am still relatively new to it. It is, in my opinion, a practical application, a fun sport, and a great basis for other MA. I believe that BJJ will work in nicely.

Naw, you're in newbietown. No fire here. You might want to have your asbestos suit cleaned and prepped when you venture into other parts of the forum though. Welcome to Bullshido.

What part of New York are you in? The city?

Oh yeah, and don't worry...there are more Aikido guys here than you would think...myself included.

Good to know there are some safehavens, I will have prepped research before I try and pimp Aikido to the crew on this forum. Hopefully some tournament footage in October, which will be mocked, yet show more than a practiced demo.

I am around the Poughkeepsie area RaiN. =D

*****The wolves come in close to the fire...just out of sight. They do not attack. they know that soon...very soon, the prey will wander away from the saftey of the burring light. The pack sniffes the air...has the scent now. They leave to hunt elsewhere. But they have the scent! That is all that matters.****

I was just asking one of my daughter's Aikido teachers about tournaments (at a BJJ tournament believe it or not, these Aikido guys cross train seriously - two purple belts at my BJJ club are BB at the Aikido school).
He said he can't figure out how they do tournaments since there are no attacks and the flavor they practice is reliant on redirecting attacks.

I'm imagining something like when you see good push hands from Tai Chi guys. I remember there being some good video linked from a thread before.

I've only taken my daughter to one class, but I'm loving how they teach and it's a great "gateway drug" to Judo and BJJ for young elementary kids. I was pretty cocky going in, I'm glad I didn't run my mouth off before finding out Sensei is a legitimate purple or higher and loves to roll anytime.
