This is really just my opinion. But I think grappling is really overated. Recently I got jumped...when I say jumped I mean I was walking across the shops to buy lunch and a guy randomly jumped on my bag intending to forced me to the ground to stomp me. I threw him of and noticed we were roughly the same size and weight (he was slightly heavier) So because of this instead of going into a big elaborate test of my Judo skills I backed of warily and broght up my guard and I suppose you could say we had a boxing match :P. Everyone who has had a fight on "t3h str33t" knows that you wouldnt wanna wrestle with somone heavier than you and that its alot easier to just pick up somone smaller than you and throw him to the ground WWF style. I dont regret doing my Judo training due to the fact that its always useful no matter who your oponent is. So anyways the point was this guy was heavier. So instead of rushing in and grappling I decided to hang back and throw punches. When he jumped at me intending to grab//choke me or whatever I would catch him throw him of and start punching. The point is grappling and throws are important but you can survive without them.

It becomes a lot more important when someone reasonably competent takes you down.

            Trust me.

Yeah i know. Still if somones attacking you in the street I doubt they are competent or trained in anything worth mentioning apart from some style of Karate taught my a Bus Driver with a crayon and a green belt.

you're missing the point that's been made on this site zillions of times for the past several years. Although grappling ability isn't necessary 100% of the time, if you end up falling to the ground with someone on top of you, you'll be in a world of shit if you don't know it. And if you're up against a good grappler and don't know any grappling, you're almost certainly fucked.

they may be a football player, or a wrestler or a natural ground and pounder. In these cases, without grappling ability you're probably gonna get pounded.

True story that happened to me 17 years ago, this is before I did any martial arts.

Got into a fight after a party against two people - that is to say they jumped me.

Fight goes to the ground with me on the bottom. One guy gets on top and starts flailing away and the other guy starts kicking.

By some instinct I grabbed the guy on top and pulled him close. In some sort of shitty untrained instinctive gaurd. The person kept on punching and beating my sides, but the other guy couldn't do anything without hitting his friend.

I was traumatized at the time however in retrospect I came out of it with only some lumps and bruises and nothing worse than I have experienced in years of MA training.

                      Lessons I learned.

                      1) Fight's go to the ground sometimes no matter what.

                      2) Knowing what to do from the bottom is not just for trying to submit someone but seriously important in defending yourself. My shitty instinctive guard kept me from getting a real beating.

Ground fighting / grappling is not just about slick submissions but also how to survive and reverse the worst postions.

Seriously Raitaro, you fail to consider that maybe this bigger guy WANTS to take you down and beat the crap out of you there, especially once you go all "kungfu" on his ass. Striking is far less effective from under mount. Grappling IS the only anti-grapple. That is not to say that striking is not important. The idea is to be a well-rounded fighter.

Thats the point. Dont grapple with a fat man. I would rather be able to do throws and strikes because I could just throw him of and throw a few punches aswell..

AAlternatively I could go SUPER SAYAN+10-X:qright4:

You have no training. You are not even a beginner. You are at best a dillitente and if you ever claim to have trained in judo again, the ghost of Jigoro Kano will materialize and kani basami your ass.

You don'tnow anything about fighting. Your thread sucks, and your perspective is narrow and meaningless. Come back when you have actually done something that would give you meaningful insight on grappling or fighting in general.
And lo, Kano looked down upon the field and saw the multitudes. Amongst them were the disciples of Uesheba who were greatly vexed at his sayings. And Kano spake: "Do not be concerned with the mote in thy neighbor's eye, when verily thou hast a massive stick in thine ass".

I said I learned from a book. I practiced on my brother and did some sparring at the local karate club. I can use these throws even if I dont do judo
