    Point Sparring is not stupid

Now that bullshido is gone. I would like to say that point sparring is not stupid. Point sparring is actually like real combat if you think about it. So in this thread I will call it point fighting. Point fighting is very useful. I'll use this comparison. Kids who play tag get alot of practice running and that practice running can be transferred to track it's the same thing with point sparring. Point sparring even helps with self defense. There was an excellent article on Map comparing point sparring to self defense situations. I'll look for it later and post it on this thread.

let me ask you this then...

If you wanted to be a good runner would you, instead of running, practice playing tag alot?

Point sparring is a limited excersize - often used in conjunction with unrealistic techniques.

I couldn't agree more, in fact I heard a rumour that Pride FC was going to start using a point sparring system (ala The Karate Kid) for all future events starting with Bushido on Monday.

Point sparring is a tool. As with all tools, it has its uses and its miss-uses.

Point sparring is not completley useless.

It is limited, but its still sparring. No ones co-operating with you, their trying to hit you and you in turn them. I think point sparring is a good "stepping stone" to introduce people into fighting. People who are new to martial arts and not comfotable with the full contact stuff.

I don't know about point sparring,

is it the same as in boxing? you get points for hitting someone right, I don't get it.

                            I thought bullshido loves boxing.

I agree. It can also introduce juniors to fighting without them getting too hammered (a concern for parents if not for the kids themselves). They can then progress to full-contact as they get older (which often happens, even with officially ''light' sparring). The real problem is when people believe point-fighting make them 'street-ready'. I would, however, suggest that point-fighting in Judo is a little more useful, though it can lead to a similar narrowness of ability, inability to handle 'illegal' techniques, and the various contingencies of actual fighting (including the pain). This is a problem with most formalised, regulated, sport-based fighting forums.
