Largely, gravity does most of the work. Then it is up to chance where you end up.
You want to end up in a dominate position. That takes a bit of practice. Same thing in striking. Any moron, with no training can knock someone out. But it takes a bit more skill to do it without hurting yourself, or getting hurt by the other person in the process. Something you don't want to rely on chance for because the alternative is you getting your ass beat.
Just as anybody can take another person down, anybody can STUFF another persons takedown. It cuts both ways.

At low levels double leg and body lock tackling works great. Especially especially against the untrained.

Gravity is not a force pulling us down, according to relativity, it only looks like a force.
It's a geometric curve in spacetime caused by warping effects of mass that results in two objects coming together, with the more massive object winning the tug of war. Hence the illusion of a force, but with infinite range.
This is why judo throws work the way they do, ideally you are passing uke along the shortest curved path to the ground, at the same time you are removing the opposing muscular forces that we use to stand, via a sweep, etc.Last edited by W. Rabbit; 1/19/2020 5:46pm, .
