So I'm doing the Wingate Combat Sport Instructor's course. My coach told me ahead of time that I would hear a lot of odd stuff and to just keep my mouth shut and learn what I need for the test and move on. For a little more explanation, there are certain topics and things that government insists that we learn, but the course instructors are free to editorialize in the midst of all of that. Also we are not permitted to record the lectures, so, sorry, even for those of you who understand spoken Hebrew, you are going to have to take my word for it.

So this week we are learning physiology of the cardio-respiratory system and how to improve it. In the midst of this the instructor goes off on one of his bat shit crazy rambles and says:



Now at this point, I was sure that there is no possible way that I either heard him right or understood him right, so since he studied in the US for his degree I ask him to repeat himself in English. He does, and yes that was exactly what he had said. So I raise my hand a second time, and ask if he has sufficient cardio to hold up for 2min under a full RNC? His response:



So, with the danger of possibly looking like a pest, I raise my hand a third time. With an exassperated sigh he asks me what I want now. I ask him if he would be willing to demonstrate this magic ability to withstand a properly placed RNC for 2 minutes. I set a timer and told him I will let go no matter what when it goes off.

I answer in the affirmative.

I shrug. He spends next 30 seconds in awkward silence staring at his watch.

His one more quick point went on for another 45min. Then on break I had a bunch of the KM guys coming up to me saying, "So you do BJJ? You know that stuff doesn't work right?"
Six more weeks until we get to the practical part. Then we'll see what does and doesn't work.

I have seen guys that are just plain hard to choke. Got nothing to do with cardio, more neck structure/musculature.

Did you begin with the slow even squeeze or did you pop into your squeeze? I have dropped a few people in combative situations in 3 Mississippi's. I have noticed if you snap into the squeeze where it's almost impact like it shaves the time down pretty good.

Frankly, lots of judoka truly suck at shime waza, relative to BJJ guys (say, purple belt and up).

We train to count to ten when we have a choke on. If they haven’t tapped or napped by then you know it isn’t sunk in fully and need to readjust.

Completely unscientific, but I think that I'm hard to choke because my neck is pencil-thin, like embarrassingly so. Under 14 inches.
