The way I read those threads..

..... by punching a Boston subway guitarist/kickboxing hobbyist in the ribs a couple times.....
...... and celebrated his victory at a nearby McDonald's.

From the three + plus years I spent training the Chun, the one fellow student who was able to really utilize the specific stuff and kick everyone's (me, other students) ass was a tall rangy 6'2 guy, huge hands, long reach. If the sparring had been anything more intense than the chi sau to trying to trap the other guy's arms and hit his chest, I would have been eating a lot of straight rights and lefts to the face, being 5'5 130 lbs.

Not a style that favors small people to the extent that it works as a way to back up/control an opponent. (Who's preferably untrained, smaller, lighter)

I stumbled across Dahlgren in my university library, consumed it in a couple days despite the opaque narrative. It amuses me that there's a genuine bifurcation of literary opinion as to whether it's a masterpiece or a troll job, because that's the effect it had on me. Probably read the same bio as you, something about the name of the commune he lived in? Also, a collection of short works, including one that always sticks in my mind about an isolated, primitive culture. It was interesting in that, a) he posited they lived in an environment of such plenty, that they had no number over twenty, anything more was "an uncountable many," and that they drew no distinction between sexes, were generally near-nude or nude all the time, but the men had a penis-like reverence for a ritualistic caving they concealed with a belt.

You are a better man than me. I have never been able to finish Dalhgren.
I think the bio book to which you refer is BREAD AND WINE, about his time in a comune or sumthin'. I have not read that one. Instead I read THE MOTION OF LIGHT OVER WATER, a biography covering his childhood, education and early writing.
I sometimes discuss stuff with him in FB.

the technique that Mr Flores lost too; involved grabbing him by the shirt with one and straight punches to the face with the other... hockey wins again.

Actually, grabbing and punching was something we practiced a lot in karate back in the 80s. A guy I knew was very proficient at grabbing the upper sleeve and twisting hard to unbalance and keep controlled his opponent while he punched the face. He once injured someone's shoulder while doing it, too.
The rise of the point-competition ruleset kinda made away with it by making grabbing the gi forbidden in competition.
