    or a Gun, gun.

CA while being more anti-gun than a lot of states is still a State in the USA.
We can own guns and gasp get ccw permits.

      Allow me to clarify:

I'm looking for instruction on how I can effectively use a knife to defend myself against someone bigger or stronger than me who does *not* have a knife nor any training in bladed weapons. E.g. big dude(s) on the street or in a parking structure at night who I want to avoid trading punches with or going to the ground with.

      I live in Irvine.

      Thanks.
That doesn't take any particular training. The tricky bit is having a lawyer good enough to get you off of the attempted murder charge you'll be facing.

        Jesus Christ.

A few thoughts: What are you so scared of in Irvine?

You are seriously dumb to think of pulling a knife on an unarmed attacker. Learn to run, or learn to fight. Otherwise, you need a weapon reasonably associated with self defense, that means a gun or taser.

I'd consider being less of a coward first though.

          I know right?

This is the best story from Irvine for those people outside of SoCal to understand Irvine.

Thank you for those who provided helpful responses. I will look into the dog brothers material. Wonder if there are local schools that teach these types of skills.

As for the others resoonses, I'm just curious, is this the way this Bullshido forum is , in general ?

I pose a question about fighting arts, and instead of providing an answer, I am told why I shouldn't be asking the question. Yes, Irvine is the safest city of its size in the country for eight years running. Yes, I am a registered gun owner. Neither are by necessity, but by choice. Same with choosing to acquire skills in knife fighting or riding a road bike 200 miles. I don't dispute that I don't need these skills.

What are you even allowed to carry over there, a little Swiss army knife?

The answer to that question is yes, your question was fucking ridiculous, so you are going to get ridiculous responses.
You can't go around stabbing unarmed people.
If you have a gun you sure as fuck should know why already.

Oh we also curse on here with regularity so there is that as well.

Besides you got your answer Dan Insanto / Dog Brothers / Being able to run the fuck away, what fucking more do you really need?

Don't take it personally. Bullshido can come across that way but it's not, or not often anyway. It's just that a lot of questions come up dozens and dozens of times and it's hard to answer them with much patience any more.

Unfortunately your question was one of those. Personally I'd suggest you'd take M Tzadok's advice regrading knives and then stick around bullshido and get a feel for the place.

As stated the Dog Brothers have some excellent material on both fighting with a knife and fighting against a knife. The Dog Brothers use a FMA (Filipino Martial Art) approach to knife and stick and blend it with BJJ, Judo, Sambo, and MMA.

Right now Crafty Dog is putting together an actual Dog Brother's MMA curriculum based on all the above and practice in as an alive environment as you can have safely.

                      I live in Irvine.

                      Thanks.
                      Awesome and good luck.

Most schools who teach: knife, stick, and blade work are complete shit because of their training methods and the fantasy based techniques.

As for the others resoonses, I'm just curious, is this the way this Bullshido forum is , in general ?
Yep. You actually got a bunch of really nice and polite response.

Not all questions are "good". As a matter of fact many questions are indeed stupid. Using knife in a self defense situation is usually hairier than using a pistol and usually a very poor choice tactically.

Yes, Irvine is the safest city of its size in the country for eight years running. Yes, I am a registered gun owner. Neither are by necessity, but by choice.
Good. Can you conceal carry? Can you conceal carry the knife you want to use? If you are training to use a knife in self defense, carry the knife illegally, then use it... it looks really bad in front of a judge.

Everyone has the same basic freedoms, not everyone has the knowledge to make the educated choices that freedom allows. It is summer. There are plenty of children on the forums asking about weapons and knives. You should be pleased that people care enough to educated you instead of sending you off to Master Wong to learn Wing Chun blade work.

                      lol

California actually lets you carry a variety of knives- open carry fixed blade has no length limit, non-switchblade folding knives have no length limit either, they just need a bias towards closure.

Don't take it personal, but rather look at it as people trying very seriously to dissuade your from a very bad course of action.

A lot of folks on this forum are instructors(even if they don't have the little tag), and at least somewhat familiar with reasonable defense laws. A good number are also lawyers and LEO types. What we are all saying is that it is somewhere between very very hard and nigh on impossible to prove self defense if you stab an unarmed person. You don't want to go to jail for something like attempted murder or worse.

If you are seriously concerned about somehow ending up in an altercation with a larger stronger unarmed opponent, then what you should do is:
                          1) Contact a lawyer, specifically a good criminal defense lawyer and find out exactly what is legal and more importantly what is not legal to carry and to use in threatening non-lethal encounters.
                          2) With your legal counsel figure out what less than lethal(because unless you can prove a lethal threat, use of lethal force is typically frowned upon) alternatives are available to you, and which would be best for you.
                          3) Take a legitimate course in how to deploy and properly use the less than lethal self defense implement you have chosen.
                          4) Get yourself into some sort of effective martial arts training so that you will be able to create space and time to deploy and employ your implement.

Honest scenario here. Big lunkhead comes up to you and wants to pick a fight. You live in California which as it turns out is a mutual combat state. Meaning it doesn't become an assault until you say you don't want to fight. If he pushes you and you push back, legitmately it is on. Now as lunkhead is trying to verbally or even physicially pick said fight, you pull a knife, you have escalated the situation and are now probably going to be the one going to jail(especially in a mutual combat state). You "defend" yourself with said weapon, maybe even just Lunkhead a little nick to warn him off, and you have now committed assault with a deadly weapon. So you see pulling the knife before the fight starts is really not an option.

So you enter combat with Lunkhead, and you pull the knife... Once again you have elevated the situation into one of lethal and illegal combat, and you are going to be at fault. The only way you have a prayer of coming out of this clean is if Lunkhead is in the process of giving you the ass kicking of your life, and you can claim that you realistically and actually feared for your life and then pulled the knife. Only problem is that by the time you get to this point, Lunkhead is going to be on you like white on rice doing his level best to beat you senseless and any honest MA instructor is going to tell you that you have next to no chance of effectively deploying your knife now. You are going to need some high level grappling and striking to be able to open up space and time to access and deploy your weapon(even if it is a gun).

In short, using a knife for self defense against an unarmed attacker is a really bad idea.

Anyway, my answer still stands. You want to learn some knife fighting tactics, seek out the Inasanto Academy.

Once you've mastered carrying a knife like a prepared, responsible adult ready to cut boxes and sandwiches and such, most of your knife education is complete.

So if you wanted to defend yourself from an unarmed person using a knife would you prefer to ice pick them or sewing machine them?
Basically what I am asking is what is your favorite way to murder someone with a knife.....
