Tier 1 means R 1 University. They grant PhD's (although there are Tier 2 Unies that also grant the PhD.

So big state schools like the one I work for are more likely to be R1 this doesn't mean getting a Phd from it no more significant than from say a R3 school.
Hell in many ways it much easier to get one from a R1 school since the school has more resources to make it easier to do so.

Completely false. R1's generally have much higher standards. Work load is more plus the other students are the best of the best. You are expected to study 20 hours for each of your classes (3) plus your TA duties (20 hours a week).

When you get to Yale and or Harvard, sometimes it is easier going, but that is because the students are so exceptional.

My daughter has. Katanas are for the lower skill Divisions. I never competed where I could win a sword. You win belts at the upper Divisions. So only belts for me from here on out.
If I ask nice she will let me borrow one though.
