They have one of the lowest firearm-related death rates in the world. You are 46 times less likely to die by firearm in the UK than the US if you believe this article. Most of their cops don't even carry guns.

Case in point, locations like House Guard's parade/barrack's are now secured with armed MOD police at entrance, whereas when I was a kid they were notably absent.

Honestly I doubt this will change anything. The UK has one of the highest rates of Islamist terror cell activity and has had for the last decade and not much has changed, arming cops would be a poor pr choice for the policing services as it would be tacit acknowledgement that they had lost control and were now relying on overt force.

i suppose we'll see. if islamist terrorists start attacking police the way they did with that soldier who was decapitated, acknowledging the loss of control would be the least of their worries.

seems to me that the UK is a powder keg, between the UKIP and the islamists.

i am very interested as to how attitudes change over there in the face of greater polarization of the population and the (IMO probable) increase in attacks by extremists. i would expect police to be the first to demand arms as they are the biggest targets (and they have the easiest route to arming themselves, AFAIK any officer can apply to be armed, it seems that for the moment most do not.)
