Right, other humans that also already knew how to fight. Picking up pointers and concepts is different from "learn to fight in your own home!"

"Tanner, with a wrestling background, began fighting in 1997 when he was convinced by friends to enter a local MMA tournament, hosted by the now defunct Unified Shoot Wrestling Federation. Tanner won the tournament, defeating three fighters including future UFC Heavyweight contender Paul Buentello, in one night.

After his initial success, Tanner taught himself submission and grappling techniques using instructional videos created by the famous Gracie family. He continued to fight in local shows and tournaments in Texas and Iowa before traveling across the world to Japan to compete in the Pancrase organization. Tanner won five fights overseas and competed in the USWF once more before being asked to join the UFC."

So he was already a solid wrestler but it's still pretty fucking impressive. Most people can't do that.

Oh, absolutely. I also think I remember somebody else beastly teaching themselves submission grappling by watching film. Still, in either case they were not untrained. I don't know of any examples of anybody that trained themselves from scratch to competent.

The value of a solid wrestling background can't be overstated. Even more so in the 90s.

Kickboxer Manson Gibson was supposedly self-trained. In Praying Mantis Kung-Fu.

Soon-to-be PitFighter Ed Lauzon is also training himself for his debut. All he does is take steroids and tear up Quick Checks to gain Street experience.

Was that a work? I've never seen so many unanswered knockdown spin kicks in a match.

I doubt it. His pro kickboxing/MT record is 115-14-2.

Caesar Takahashi (The founder of shootboxing and MMA pioneer) was kind of old by that point.

If that's true about Gibson, then that's impressive.
