The funny thing is in the early days of "boxing" throws and even kicks where permitted.

It's probably a new thread and I definitely am interested in your reasoning. I would guess that an effective complete style would need to be very organized and systematic about developing skills, for instance sparring sessions without kicks, pure grappling days etc.

As with most things your training needs to reflect what you are trying to accomplish.
If you want to compete in a certain rule set that rule set is going to define your training heavily.
If you want to compete in multiple rules sets the common ground is going to define the lions share.
If "self defense" is your goal your going to have to train in a manner that reflects what ever your specific self defense goals are.

That's not true. I choke people out at work for taking the last cup of coffee without making more. Shit works great. It's well known that if you drink the Last cup of joe...... you make some moe.

I literally teach punching into the clinch and kicking into a body lock. It's part of the Gracie Basics. This idea is a corner stone of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. 2:39 the clinch stuff starts. This is beginners stuff.https://youtu.be/Aeg926nPCGQ

But if you got the heads of the various federations together I bet they could agree pretty broadly on many points and also about what it is not. After all, what is the point of practicing a particular ryu if you are going to be open to every technique and training method out there?
It's a good question. I suppose it depends on what you've decided Shotokan is to begin with.

You want to start it or should I?

Please start; I am not sure where it should go.

MMA vs TMA really is like Kirk vs. Picard, on one hand you have the brash but effective commander with a love for alien women, fisticuffs, and Romulan ale, and the other a hardcore but sophisticated war tactician, with a preference for French wine.

Choosing one is impossible, for me.

I'd say more like Sisko vs. Jar Jar Binks.

You know....I feel you brah, but Jar Jar is partly responsible for the destruction of an interplanetary government. He's far more dangerous than he seems, it's too bad nobody realized that until it was too late.

Because he was so dangerous, I really believe Jar Jar was executed by the Emperor right after Episode III. They'll probably go into that in Episode VII, bringing a lot of SW fans closure.

How the fuck did this devolve into a Star Wars crapfest?
