I'm almost positive Daryl has killed at least one zombie with a hammer.

If you really tally it up they've killed zombies in a hundred different ways.

Yeah even a 70lb compound is hell on the fingers I couldn't imagine 160.

In fact most of the weapons in Walking Dead are more for dramatic effect than realism. Lets be honest. Daryl would be beter served by a rock hammer but dang if he doesn't look super cool throwing bolts through zombie heads. Badass.

Mongol invaders on the other hand...

...the ol' x-bow is just what the women and children of the village ordered. The old school equalizer.
I doubt even their guns would be functioning well, they have hot humid weather every episode and they don't exactly treat their weapons good. And Michonnes katana would look like shit unless we are suppose to believe that she polishes it every day. Of course she's kinda crazy so maybe she does.

However, the one he uses on the show is digital. A strong person can load a 125 manually, but very few people could load a 160lb draw without a tool, so doing it as fast as Daryl does on the show requires digital effects (which in fact is exactly what they do).

Personally, I think this is Mythbusters-worthy...but a crossbow is probably NOT an effective anti Zombie weapon. It's too slow to reload, and too much maintenance required every half dozen shots or so, without which it will deteriorate fast, it will become less effective or even break at which point you're zombie chow.

Honestly I've never used the lighter crossbows, but I know this is true for the heaver ones (150+ lbs). The Ghost is 175.

They won't let me bring the crossbow to the guild range, it's too dangerous to others outdoors and practically stupid to use it indoors. I literally have to drive to upstate PA and find some field. 109 ft-lbs of delivery, so it's got the stopping power of a small caliber handgun. I've lost a lot of bolts just because they have a habit of blowing through backstops and embedding themselves into the earth forever.

Did you know crossbows require heavy applications of lube? Now you do.

I made fun of the Walking Dead one night..."Daryl doesn't use any lube!! ha ha".

    Nobody thought I was funny.

That would destroy the bolts. If the bolt hits anything solid it will usually deform. There is just too much energy, about equivalent to a .32 caliber pistol.

A bolt has about twice the energy at a hundred yards that a 70 lb compound could have max, at point blank range.

I've tried different things...really heavy pillows, plastic bins.

My next project? Home-made ballistics gel.

No I'm a cheap skate. Those things are expensive and I'm pretty sure they're shitty for the environment. I make my own backdrops, to varying degrees of success.

A 350 fps bolt delivery of 109 fl-lbs will go into almost anything deep enough that you'll never get it out, or fly farther than you'll ever hope to find it, unless it hits something first. It can be impossible to find bolts that miss the target completely. A bolt could fly hundreds of yards before dropping. Who the fuck knows where they all go..the bolt gnomes must grab them.

A couple of these in a row should stop a bolt, if your worried about the back of the stops you could add a couple plywood planks.
