Archery: Now a Live Martial Art

I know there have been waves of them in the past. If they are still doing so it would have to be more subtle than it was.

They have to be more careful, but most aren't because they don't know how.

Honestly...I fear the damage is already done and that is supported by the metrics.

But where there is love, life begins over again. I love Bullshido, so it has a shot. If I can love this place, anybody can.

Til then, I will destroy any troll or otherwise bad person that comes here with a vengeful fury, like a hammer of the underworld.

In an effort to get this topic somewhat back to archery. Do any of you shoot traditional bows?? Personally I have always preferred traditional bows over compound, a couple months back I was looking for a new recurve, but the prices are way out of my pay scale. For me I like the feel of using an ancient weapon, it's the reason I practice with swords and the reason I like traditional bows.

For me I like the feel of using an ancient weapon, it's the reason I practice with swords and the reason I like traditional bows.

I got a merit badge for archery when I was a Boy Scout. I also diddled with the idea of signing on with the Society for Creative Anachronism to have people to shoot with. I used a 6 foot linen-backed red oak longbow with a 25 pound pull and later upgraded to a 50 pounder. I shot ash arrows fletched with turkey feathers made by the guy who sold me my bows and the glovelet I wore to protect the web of my palm from getting sliced open by the aforementioned fletching. I'm not any good at it, but I loved archery, from a recreational and historical viewpoint. I am of English descent, after all.

Yeah, after trying out different bows, I prefer non-compound a lot. Just seems more fun.

Anyway, this is my first bow and I was told to go a little lighter in the beginning, so this one is only #30. I can get some nice lengths with it because it's a nice bow, but at certain ranges the hits get a bit unrealistic so I'll probably upgrade to #40 or #45 at some point next year.

Have you tried making your own bow ? There are stickbow "kits" out there that are not expensive, or you can build (or try to build) a "board bow".

Too heavy a bow to start means you develop bad form/poor fundamentals. Plus potential injuries.

Yeah I looked into it, but I figured it would probably end up out in the garage next to my sword build project. I have a bad habit of not finishing projects I start.

Yup, that's why I went for the lighter one. I first tried this archery stuff while I was on vacation in Italy and the dude gave me a #45. It was fun, but after learning a bit more about the whole thing I know why he did it and I know why it wasn't the best place to start.

Really, nobody's challenging me to produce crossbow video??? I am so disappoint.

They won't let me bring the crossbow to the guild range, it's too dangerous to others outdoors and practically stupid to use it indoors. I literally have to drive to upstate PA and find some field. 109 ft-lbs of delivery, so it's got the stopping power of a small caliber handgun. I've lost a lot of bolts just because they have a habit of blowing through backstops and embedding themselves into the earth forever.

Did you know crossbows require heavy applications of lube? Now you do.

I made fun of the Walking Dead one night..."Daryl doesn't use any lube!! ha ha".

Nobody thought I was funny.

A couple of these in a row should stop a bolt, if your worried about the back of the stops you could add a couple plywood planks.

No I'm a cheap skate. Those things are expensive and I'm pretty sure they're shitty for the environment. I make my own backdrops, to varying degrees of success.

A 350 fps bolt delivery of 109 fl-lbs will go into almost anything deep enough that you'll never get it out, or fly farther than you'll ever hope to find it, unless it hits something first. It can be impossible to find bolts that miss the target completely. A bolt could fly hundreds of yards before dropping. Who the fuck knows where they all go..the bolt gnomes must grab them.
