I always viewed the desire to be an all around bad ass as nothing more than a hyper-extension of the self-preservation instinct.

Good point. Yes, the Secret Service protection details are trained to fuck things up, but it is all based around the concept of keeping your charge alive to the exclusion of pretty much any other consideration.

Not quite. It depends on who and where you are in a protective detail. If you are the primary, the one tasked with getting the HVA to safety, taking a bullet is failing at your mission. You have to survive so that your protectee can survive. Which is why Reagan's primary, if you watch the tape, pushed Senator Brady and a fellow Secret Service agent in front of the shooter. There is a rather mercenary downside to learning Secret Service skills, in that you start looking at the people around you as potential knife and bullet cushions should things go hot, and you need to get your wife and kids out of there. It can't be worse than Shabak suggesting that sitting next to fat people on the bus would increase you chances of survival in a bombing during the second intifada.

Speaking of insecurities, to bring this thread back around, This Derek fellow if anything has at the very least made a decent living, he does have a nice house.
I mean he certainly has enough legitimate accomplishments that I have to wonder what need drives him to try and inflate all of his other accomplishments?
Maybe it is a result of not accomplishing much in the military so for the 1st 1/2 of his life he felt underachieving. It does look like the 2nd 1/2 of his life though has met with a reasonable amount of success.

Understood, and this really is just a better explanation of my point that ultimately, the focus is not "you"- your survival is secondary at best, and is really only relevant to the extent that the survival of your assignment is dependent on it.

As was pointed out previously, the Seabees are no joke. I don't know why someone who has legitimately been there and done that can't simply be proud of that on its own merit.as you have hinted at though, two years as a Seabee in the reserves in 81-82 was probably a fairly uneventful enlistment.

From everything he has in cyberspace, I was able to see he probably has a legit black belt in hapkido.

I have no idea what his it resume is, but noone is calling me up asking me to give my expert opinion in front of a television camera.

Well here I am folk, I have read the many things said about me, and that's OK. There will always be trolls and there will always be haters. I am proud of my service and I make a GREAT living in cybersecurity so the comments don't matter. If you want to know, I finished as an E-6. I did try officer candidate school, but my bad knees kept me from finishing and I did not go hire than that because I focused on my education and not so much on rank as I new I was going to get out and become a federal agent so I needed my degrees.. In the Navy I was a Seabee, in the Air Force I was a Special Agent in OSI (15 years ACTIVE), and in the Army I was CID (National Guard called to active duty twice). I was also an instructor at the OSI academy teaching defensive tactics and firearms. So no, I was not a desk jockey and I never did IT in the military (I was flight operations before joining OSI. Someone talked about me collecting associates degrees, but failed to mention my 3 masters degrees and my doctorate, but haters will hate of course. And I am now 57 years old and although I do practice BJJ and eskrima, I have had my knee replaced and won't be doing challenge matches. Yes, I served as a special agent with the department of ed, but also with the Treasury Department and Postal service and DIA. If you even know what it means, I did counterintel work during desert storm out of Turkey and HUMINT collection. And yes, growing up on the south side of Chicago, I did have to fight A LOT. I am sure that a lot of you haters cannot even begin to touch the many things I have accomplished so all you can do is criticize and hate...its what you do. But your experience cannot hold a candle to mine. And I make and have made a darn good living doing it too. And not only am I an expert at various martial arts I was and I am still a firearms instructor, with my own PI firm.

Why would I provide my DD214s to perfect strangers. How many of you have been on television, written books, earned your blackbelts, earned multiple degrees, acted in movies, owned their own companies, etc. I don't have to lie and I don't have to prove my record. As for the advertising, the company did it and that's what companies do to sell products. But they did and still do pay me lots of money. As for the military and counterintelligence, most of you have no clue what you are talking about. Reading off the internet is not living it. While you criticize and judge me, I have truly lived a life of adventure while you play at it. I am no super soldier or superhero and don't claim to be...but I bet I know a little bit more than almost all of you.
