    For those who appreciate awesomeness...

    Hi everyone,

As you may know, the IBJJF World Championships are taking place right now and everyone at Gracie Barra Birmingham is rooting for our head coach, Braulio Estima.

I just wanted to share this sweet spinning kneebar he landed in his first match yesterday:

(apologies in advance if this was posted in the wrong place)

Can someone explain what actually happened here? Is this arm bar defense transitioning into a knee bar? At around the 10 second mark I loose total understanding of what is going on. Was the knee bar his intention from the beginning - or was this an opportunistic grab?

      Awesome.

Way too flashy. Would never work against a resisting opponent.

I don't think this was opportunistic, at all. It's the game, and he played it well. You can see at 0:07, he breaks his opponent's base; at 0:11, he frees his opponent's hand from his knee, but he maintained the half-spider-guard thing he was doing with the other side. That allowed him to spin - outside of his opponent - and sink the kneebar. Well played, and a slick move.
Consider for a moment that there is no meme about brown-haired, brown-eyed step children.

He definitely set it up on purpose. You can see him opening up his opponent's arm with the foot on bicep at 0:08-10 to make space for the spin.

I watched it several times because I favor this spin to kneebar technique myself, and I've never had that clean of an entry. Although that is easily explained by the fact that I'm no world class competitor.

I also failed to notice that he went directly to the headlock grip the first 4-5 times I watched it. That's why Mr. Machado had to tap immediately even though Mr. Estima was pretty low on the leg for a kneebar. That grip makes any kneebar much tighter. Another example of the elbow to rib clamp being highly effective.
Shut the hell up and train.

Braulio Estima himself breaking down the move, shows a few details I would never have understood on my own from just watching that one video.

That is a thing of beauty. Guys who don't appreciate grappling don't know what the hell they're missing!

Braulio is solid! The fluidity in the video at the competition was clean.

BJJ takes the cake on the ground but what about standup? I prefer Jeet Kune Do..... Great fundamental discipline....
