    Full Metal Jousting?

I considered putting this in the Western Martial Arts section, but its ridiculous enough that I reckon it warrants a YMAS post:

So I was flicking through the channels the other night and I came across an episode of this thing:

It seems to be kind-of like TUF with lances, but you get less man drama and more spears embedded in groins (I counted 3 in the episode I watched).

I'm not sure it has enough variety to be entertaining for long, but for now its pretty entertaining in a "wtf is going on here?" kind of way.

    I'm sold!

Heck, I've wanted to see a real live jousting match since I was a little kid!

So they wear protective armor, but wouldn't it still really suck to get knocked off a horse onto the ground by a colliding horseman? That's like being super-judoed or something.

As far as I could tell from the episode I watched, knocking your opponent off the horse is basically your Ippon.

There needs to be more of this. Medieval combat sports are fun to watch.

It aired on the History Channel originally. As far as I know they only made the one season of it.

If I remember correctly, you get 1 point for contact, 5 for breaking a lance, and 10 for un-horsing your opponent. If you are able to continue after being unhorsed, you can keep going so it's not exactly like an Ippon. I think they got something like 6 or 8 passes per match to score as many points as they could.

There is a fair bit of man drama in it, especially the episode where one of the competitors punches a horse and gets kicked off the show.

What?! Why the hell would anyone want to punch a horse?

he says that the footage of him that has been seen around the world was misleading, and that he only hit out in panic after the horse was spooked by a firecracker and charged at him.

That's a different incident. The guy in the Herald Sun article was Barry Rogerson, some soccer fan that punched a police horse. On the show it was Landon Morris who punched the horse after it stepped on him.

Jousting is still the state sport of Maryland.

This is another reason why I am more awesome than you.

Damn, you Brits are behind the fucking times. This show was interesting for 10 minutes last year. I have a Hypercolor t-shirt I can sell you when they finally get in style over there.

Seriously though, these fuckers are batshit crazy. Fuck getting rammed in the chest at 35 mph while wearing some clanky ass armor, then falling 6 feet flat onto your back. Not good.

England thought jousting was cool waaay before the US caught on.

The U.S. didn't fail to catch on. We dismissed it, except for a few renaissance fair losers.

I'm not a Brit, I just live here. It takes us third worlders some time to catch up on this shit.
