It seems to me that the brown belt should have shown up in T-shirt and shorts, and been prepared to answer truthfull about his rank if asked. If you're worried about someone else misrepresenting their rank in a BJJ class. misrepresenting your own is a poor way to start off addressing it.

That's why I said the video has more context. The Brown Belt was making the "dojo storm" bigger than it really was IRL.

So after checking in with reliable sources this weekend, I have come to the conclusion that "Joshjitsu" (not to be confused with Coach Josh) pulled a Sirc and I fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
Apparently even though I am almost thirty and a purple belt in BJJ I still have enough moisture to float the Bismarck behind my ears.

At one point Forrest Griffen was a "false grappler" - there are exceptions that prove the rule, and there are multiple paths through training.

If a blue had gone there to try a class and tapped everybody it would be a little different...what did the brown prove? He should have been able to tap the room, and he did.

Actually, it was the female Blue Belt who went around tapping everyone out. The Brown was playing possum.

But to be honest, I made this thread because I was bemused on how I went from screaming for the heads of false grapplers with the passion of Pat Robertson on the ACLU in 2007 to being all gooey and sympathetic to these guys in a mere five years later.

It's troubles me because I like to think of myself as a mighty oak standing against the tides of time and change, but now I feel like a mere flip flopper, spinning in whatever direction the prevailing wind blows.

Honestly it depends how you look at it.... Is he pretending to be a blackbelt? No. I asked him that point blank, and while he dodged the question he did eventually say word for word in front of his students "I am not a BJJ Black Belt. This is a midnight blue belt, it means that I am certified under the WBJJA and Professor Thadue to instruct BJJ". He may as well be wearing a pink belt. It stands for nothing.

As far as going there and offering to teach? NO WAY this place is located behind a Resturaunt called The Tater Tot. In a town with 1 red light. Besides, this psychopath is probably in this more because he likes being king of the retards than getting good at BJJ or money.

The sad thing is there is a quality GB Blackbelt run school 15min from them.

I don't think he would have been a hypocrite in doing so. I'm completely with you about not wearing your rank to another school (I wear white at other schools, and if they want to recognize my rank, that's fine too).

In this case, it was a BJJ brown visiting a (supposed) BJJ school. I started attending my school when my instructor was a purple. Had a competent brown come in with a white belt and tooled him for no reason, it would have destroyed a legitimate school. This is a different case, because the instructor was wearing a rank that was presumably not awarded to him. I would have announced my brown to the instructor, and gone from there.

Since it seems that we agree on the general issue, I guess this is just debate on the finer points of dojo storming :P

Um no not the same thing. 1. As silly as it were he wasn't wearing a blackbelt. 2. He's a blackbelt in another system. If the instructor was wearing a blackbelt from that style when teaching then it is what it is.

A few years ago, as a BJJ Blue, a friend of mine and I heard of a new school just north of Daytona Beach whose instructor was claiming he was a BJJ Black Belt under very suspect linage.

The guys name was Chris Van Valkenburg, and the school was Impact House MMA. Here is a link to the thread where I went in, introduced myself and my friend (who was a purple belt at the time) and why we were there.

If you are going to "dojo-storm" you do it up front, without pretense, and with full disclosure....unless circumstances dictate otherwise.

For the sake of open debate I'm going to disagree with you on this one. If you're going to prove something to a person don't be a hypocrite while doing it. I've gone to many BJJ gyms and worn a white belt but never went to tool people even if I was more experienced than them. I've gone to many schools claiming to teach jiu jitsu only to find them sorely lacking. I've done this in many styles and schools. I would never do that to the head instructor unless openly given permission to do so.
