There was some clear Rocky robbery going on as it was set in a dreary new-England area, overcast and cold with some blue-collar and the dad/coach figure. The main thing it had going for it was that it was a movie about shared common experiences (broken families, especially timely for me right now) set against the backdrop of the fighting. I was, of course, dismayed that we found out virtually nothing about how these guys got to be such phenomenal fighters. One brother shows up and takes out a top middleweight without pause and then his old, broken down dad who couldn't possibly have been an MMA guy because he is TOO OLD has him pounding tires with sledgehammers.

The trainer for the teacher/brother made a lot more sense, was a great, inspirational character and obviously new his stuff. I was super pissed that the montage scenes provided no inspiration when that was the greatest moment in Rocky. I was pleasantly surprised at how utterly awesome the fights were (despite the complete lack of defense by anyone ever) with the powerbombs, cranked shoulders and whatnot. There were people cheering behind me.

The end, however, left me shaking my head. If someone was ever able to fight with a tweaked shoulder, we would have seen it already. And it seemed rather obvious to me that the guy who lost was the better fighter.

Yeah it was sentimental and cheesy, but that's me. I want to believe underdogs can win and families can get back together. They knew that when they made it.

Yes, it was good, but not great. The ultra short version is direction, cinematography, choreography: brilliant. Acting: Solid. Script: Utter garbage.
You know, if you added "much worse than the commercials led you to believe", you could be discribing every M. Night Shyamalan movie ever made. Except for the part about good choreography maybe.

Personally I loved the movie, and was surprised there weren't a bunch of Tapfliction Toolbags running around. I went on Friday opening night at about 1800hrs. I imagine the lack of toolbaggery was due to them primping for a long night of clubbing on a Friday night.

I usually like long segments of training footage in fight movies. I think it pays homage to the hard work and sacrifice the fighters put in to fight at any level. This movie didn't really have that. They put in just enough to show that the fighters train, but not really to the extent that you would think the training took over their lives. It kind of makes me wonder, if this movie will bring forth, or expand a breed of Tapfliction toolbag who thinks he is the dark horse younger brother who can kick anyone's ass, in a few seconds, but just hasn't had his chance yet? Bouncers everywhere, prepare to be annoyed!

Pretty much what was to be expected, right? At least from looking at the trailers. Good thing it didn't disappoint in those first three criteria.

Great to hear its actually good. Someone recently told me about one about an underground mma movie in australia (takes place there or produced there) that they said was pretty decent. Don't know if any of you know the name, I couldn't find it.

I am glad Nick Nolte got a solid review. I like a good come back story.

Plus I love stories taken in my city. We are the Fecking Balls. :-)

Because of RoC tonight and Bellator tomorrow I won't actually have a review of this one done until Sunday. I think some of it is based on the low standards people have for the genre. The action scenes are an unqualified success, though.

So how did this one sneak past me. There's a new MMA movie out and it's actually getting decent reviews. 84% on Rotten Tomatos and even Ebert gave it 3 stars. Looks like I'll be going to check this sucker out on Sunday.
