    Need New Art.

Hello! I have taken Kung Fu for about a year and a half now, it has no grapples or ground fighting or anything like that it also has many "deadly techniques". It is fun to take but I really feel like if I get into a fight all I would be able to do is to throw punches and kick peoples knees out, and if someone tries to take me to the ground I am more than likely screwed.

Pretty much looking for a good style that has both standup and ground fighting, mainly ground fighting though because thats what I am lacking in. I was thinking Judo or JJ.

PS: I live in the Mooresville, NC area, if anyone knows a good school off hand lemme know. Thanks

Look for wytstal's first thread. It has a comprehensive answer to this question.

        Hey big mike
what do you prefer out of judo and ju jitsu?
I origenally wanted to learn JJ, but judo is what we have in the area.
I enjoy judo and would recomend it, but is the jj more "complete" as a fighting system what with strikes included?

Geicojacob, by JJ do you mean Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or 'traditional' Ju Jitsu?

The JJ I practice, is of the new school "sport/combat" JJ, i.e, we focus on throws and groundwork (I.E, there should be another letter on the front of it, but for legal reasons we cant) . I love JJ, mainly because for me, its a challenge, I have a large frame, so successfully using techniques ive learnt is a really satisfying feeling. Judo I enjoy because I get more time to work on my throws and get to learn a different moveset of submissions. For striking I do Muay Thai.

Long story short, I have access to multiple arts and pick and choose as I like really.

My JJ is not what you may get from JJJ. Judo is damn good if you're looking for hard hitting throws and sport submissions.

If you want to round yourself out with strikes, look for Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay thai or the like.

I train TKD for strikes. I am pretty limited for choice as we are in rural area off the beaten track, but we have an ecclectic selection of MA. Recently started is mediaeval european weapon training!
Dont get enough oppertunities to cross train thats for certain!
So is your Judo more standing than than your JJ? our club is a lot stronger on the ground, partly for historical reasons

My JJ club is mostly groundwork. We roll as opposed to spar. Judo breaks down to about 30 mins of newaza (ground sparring) and 30 mins of randori (Throws) a night. Im having some trouble in Judo at the moment because im going from comfortably heel hooking and knee barring on wednesdays in JJ to having to follow Judo rules on thursdays.

My newaza is pretty good for a noob, because I can sweep and pass guard easy enough, but im still getting used to the restrictions.

Medieval weapons training sounds awesome. I know some people who do battle re-enactments who train in that kind of stuff, but ive never had the time to check it out.

As a skinny chick I'd say traditional Japanese Jujitsu is great for self defense. It involves vital point striking, joint locks, throws, pain compliance and chokes. Standup, transitional and ground techniques are all taught. What I appreciate most is that it uses biomechanics and technique rather than strength.
