Also the incorrect usage of 'fewer' and 'less'. Fewer for number, less for quantity, i.e 'There were ten thousand fewer entrants' and ' I have less hair now than I used too'.

I'm with you 100% on the fewer/less error. This is probably my number one grammar irritant. It's such an easy distinction, yet people refuse to care.

I hadn't really thought about "momentarily" but now that you mention it, that word, and ones similar to it, are a great example of lazy language. Strictly speaking, telling someone "I'll be with you momentarily" would mean that once you get to them, you will only be with them for a moment.

A few weeks ago Jon Jones tried to kick Shogun in the knees to bust them up.

The reason that noone uses the instant "strike the back of elbow" arm breaks is that they dont actually work in real life.

I tell people I'll be with them momentarily in a moment, and they think I'm being redundant.

I hate prescriptivist grammarianism. The people who tend to be the biggest grammar Nazis tend to have no linguistics background or understand how grammar works and was actually made up by Latin obsessed weirdos with no grounding in the actual way spoken English works. In America, you have people saying stupid crap like that the midwestern and/or West Coast dialect of American English is "accentless" and it gets the prestige dialect status. People who speak with an "unauthorized" dialect such as myself speaking with Southern American English are somehow "wrong" or uneducated based once again on the fact that no one knows a damn thing about the development of English grammar and how we just stole Latin grammar when we tried to create some sort of standard (thank God we're not like the French and we don't have a snobby language academy dictating from on high the proper way to speak surrenderese). I'll say y'all when I damn well please outside of formal academic writing because it's a second person plural that our language ought to have.

By the way, people tend to curse the name of prescriptivist grammar books such as Elements of Style among the linguists I talk to due to the fact that it actually has lead to hypercorrection which is the hallmark of snobbery and just as bad as "bad grammar" if you want to go there. I would recommend the book Everything you Know About English is Wrong to the recovering grammar Nazi. I used to be one, now I'm proud of my dialect and don't give a fuck about this linguistic imperialism bullshit outside of, once again, formal academic writing.

Damn I love the Internet. It's 2am here in Australialand, when I open a thread that I've been reading which has made me realise what a dick I'm being during my grammar Nazi episodes. I see a post that recommends some books about linguistics, then go to the Borders site and order one of them for only $19.95, all in the space of ten minutes.

And then there's all the porn! Damn I love the Internet.

                Awesome post Epeeist, thank you.

Thanks guys. I point out also that Elements of Style has been called the "book that ate America's brain" because of its lambasting such things as split infinitives and perfectly fine grammar. In Everything you Know About English is Wrong there are outstanding arguments about why ain't is a perfectly fine word and why double negatives can be OK and how Chaucer even used triple negatives (because even by Middle English, there was no English "grammar" and I argue there still isn't).

Having watched that video now Vince, I want a tattoo of a stuffy Englishman lecturing about prescriptive grammar and a bald eagle shedding a tear about it under the words, "Freedom isn't Free." Also, even though I play Dark Angels and Mordian Iron Guard, Alpha Legion is absolutely my favorite CSM legion so good form on that front.
