They probably do know what rabies is - they referred to the raccoon as "mad". Could be that they can't call it rabies until it's officially diagnosed. Rabies outbreaks have a tendency to freak pet owners out pretty badly.

They did. They kicked it, then killed it. But they had to file a report and didn't want to put the word "rabies" in it for some reason. I would hazard a guess that the reason is so that the neighborhood doesn't get all panicked.

I'm guessing it's because it hadn't been confirmed to be rabid at the time the report was filed. My experience with that type of report writing is that you never ever ever put opinion in, even if it's something that seems obvious. I'm surprised there wasn't a line about the raccoon allegedly having rabies. The line about a punt suggests a cop with a sense of humor, at least.

Yeah I totally understand, I'm just ranting for the fun of it. Cops probably didn't want to put "rabies" in the report no matter how obvious it seemed because it's always an assumption untill the tests come back, and why ass-u-me?
