    ...From Austin

Moved to Austin five months ago from a dirty state over in the Northeast, you know the one. I'm 20 years old and have been interested in martial arts for the past couple years but never attended any schools and have no experience. Currently I haven't done shit but research some local schools.

I'm more interested in striking vs grappling but from what I've read about some of the BJJ schools in Austin it would be dumb to pass them up and at the very least check them out.

I was looking into CTC until they closed, so now I'm looking at Relson Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Integrated Fighting Arts and Rubicon Fightsport. I really like that I can pay $110 a month at Rubicon and get unlimited classes with lots of classes throughout the week.

    Thanks for having me.

Welcome. I'm in San Antonio myself. I've been up to Austin a few times, and met a few Bullshidoka there. I know a couple of them trained at a great BJJ/MMA school. The instructor was very talented and generous with his time and information. Shoot me a PM to remind me, and I'll see if I can't dig up the name for you. As I recall, it was pretty cheap (and honestly, might be one of the ones you mentioned already, I'll have to double check)

Oh, and always up for a good sparring and/or training session when time presents itself. In the good ol days we had a few Throwdowns for people around the South Texas region. No experience needed, just a learning attitude.

I'm a purple under Phil, so I'm biased toward his gym. Also pro fighters wander through there frequently, Kamal Sholarous, Tim Kennedy, Yves Edwards. Badass purple belts like David Koresh Jr....

Check out each one of the gyms and talk to the students.

What part of town are you in? Down south, Rubicon, RGJJ and Ernesto Peralez are all great places. If you are up north, you have Vandry BJJ, Trainers Elite with Sean Cooper, Gracie Barra, Brasa with Ze Mario Esfiha and in Round Rock, Robby Rabadi at Round Rock BJJ.

I have a friend who is a brown belt at Rubicon, three friends who train with Ernesto and several friends at Phil's school. All have been solid but I have only trained with Ernesto, who has a black belt in judo as well. I liked his style of teaching and he is a solid coach.

I have friends who train with Ze Mario and I am a Vandry student but I have trained with Sean and Robby as well. All are great choices but Robby and Sean have great kick boxing instructors as well as terrific bjj.

All that said, welcome to Austin and I hope you find a great school to call home!

Definitely find the ones close to you, jeez the traffic gets awful there. All the ones Nazir mentioned are good schools.

I'm from Austin; never did more than TKD there as a kid, so I can't speak too much to the MA side, but from an overall quality-of-life and great-place-to-live perspective, I envy you. Enjoy your stay, however long, and welcome to Bullshido.

Consider for a moment that there is no meme about brown-haired, brown-eyed step children.

I'm actually located in West University so Integrated Fighting Arts is by far the closest. After looking it up again Rubicon is a lot further than I had originally thought but it's still the most intriguing. Thanks for all the links I'll definitely check them out.

Huge fan of Ranger Up and Tim Kennedy for sure.

And on the traffic, sweet Jesus I thought the Northeast was fucked but daaaaamn. It baffles the shit outta me, so much open space in Texas and such awful traffic.
