Whoa. There's actually a tradition of big group fistfights in Russia that goes back a really, really long time.

That doesn't surprise me, I've seen this before:

My crackpot theory is that the cold in Russia develops really dense bones, and it also keeps the swelling down and builds tolerance to discomfort, so they're just better prepared to deal with really dangerous stuff.

I mean, honestly, between that and this pic there must be an explanation:

I stubbed my toe in the cold once and it was just awful.

I guess whenever a TMA guy comes on and claims that he's too deadly for sport and that his art can handle multiple opponents, we can just refer him to Russia.

We call them Ustawka (from "ustawić" - to set something up) here. In Poland those fights are usually soccer hooliganism related, and are as the name implies set up earlier. Usually some conditions are agread upon, the most common of which are- the number and age of participants, the use of weapons and hitting of the downed men. Usually fights are barehanded but sometimes boxing tape or gloves and mouthguards are agreed upon. Besides the fighters there are usually people from other teams controlling if the conditions are observed. The figth ends when one team submits.

Those pick-up games in Russia are getting pretty violent.

                    Go skins.

It actually sort of kind of looked like fun to me. It seemed to be fairly gentlemanly to me. This is the type of thing I think that is good for societies to engage in.

Seems America has a similar tradition, but limited to certain times of the year:
