    Crossfit Gym Pricing is Ridiculous

Just a little venting on my part.

I decided to see what the Crossfit scene was like locally (Montreal) and discovered to my great joy that there were 3 Crossfit gyms in town. Happy that I might get to give it a try I checked out their websites to get membership information.

Holy fuck, I know that Crossfit is the new "it" workout thing but the pricing ranges from $100 - $150 per month and at least one requires a minimum 6 or 12 month contract.

This is fucking ridiculous McDojo stuff. For that I can join a good BJJ gym and have access to unlimited BJJ, MMA and Muai Thai classes. I currently lift at a snazzy gym that occupies prime real estate in a popular well traffiqued shopping area, has all kinds of classes I can attend (should I be into that) and nice locker facilities and I don't pay anywhere near that. These Crossfit gyms rent empty industrial area (usually cheap), buy used equipment that can be easily banged around, and the "locker" facilities barely meet code, so what the hell is up with the pricing?

From what I can tell quite a few of the Crossfit workouts don't require any special equipment (or really basic equipment) and can probably be done in my yard. I think I might go that way to give it a shot.

    Bingo.

But you could probably satisfy your curiosity about crossfit for free by asking for week-long trial memberships at each club. That would give three weeks of crossfit fun for free.

Once you see what it is and isn't you will probably turn around and go back to what you really enjoy doing.

Also you can find a bunch of their workouts online with a bit of digging. If you have an olympic barbell lying around that's half the battle and equipment you'll need.

Can't you find the entire thing here? http://crossfit.com/
Serious question I haven't actually dug very deeply into that site.

They have an open house once in a while but to attend any of the group classes you MUST pay for and take the introductory phase (3 personal session) at a cost of about $150.

No free weeks in any of the gyms in my area.

Ive been doing crossfit on and off for a year and its all on the website. My gym has most of the equipment i need for it and i modify when necessary. Its not a bad program and the variety helps you stick to it.

                  Use www.CrossFit.com

Everything you need is there and at your gym. They even have some stuff explaining how to modify the workouts if you don't have all the equipment (like gymnast rings or 20lbs med balls etc.)

Their gyms don't have particularly stringent quality control in terms of instruction either so you may or may not be missing out on anything.

It's to be expected. It's catering towards a "no-think" crowd, and the cost of someone else doing your research for you tends to come out like this.

Considering the Crossfit Level 1 Certification is $1,000 (no joke), I can understand charging that much.

Really, if you saved up the money that a membership would cost, you could just buy a sweet garage gym.

If you have a place to do pullups and dips, and basic weightlifting equipment you can just hit up the crossfit.com website and do the WOD scaled for your ability and you'll get everything out of crossfit that you would get from one of the gyms pretty much.
