    Gaining weight on a vegetarian diet and funky gis, (not necessarily related).

    1: Weighed myself tonight. Since I started lifting near a year ago i've gone from 147# to 165#. On a vegetarian diet, that's progress.

    2: Why do disgusting Gis smell like ammonia?

      1) Good job! Do you happen to know how much of that is lean mass?

      2) Never noticed an ammonia smell, more like a bacteria/BO/dirt feet stink

        Well I pretty much have no body fat. I'm an anemic, poor, vegetarian, I really hadn't had many opportunities.

            I've also had sweatty clothes that smell like ammonia. But it only happens when they aren't allowed to dry and stay wet overnight. Try hanging your gi out to dry and see what happens

                mine only smells of ammonia if I have been boozing before training.

                Weight wise are you eating enough pulses and nuts to keep your protien up, it's not as easy on a vegie diet?

                    So Vegetarian, not Vegan, right? Because Vegans can go suck a fucking exhaust pipe.

                    I'd probably attribute the weight gain to age. Just be careful as you creep towards your 30's because body fat is a bitch to get off as your metabolism slows down.

                      I went from my eternal resting state of 170 to over 200 on a veggie diet - but I doubt there was any muscle in that, I just started living at an all-you-can-eat veg buffet (literally).

                      Anyway, great job on the lifting progress, keep up your whey shakes and nuts intake, and for Krishna's sake get some leafiness and color in your diet.

                      As for the ammonia thing, I'll repeat urea FTW.

                          Heed this warning, losing weight over 30 sucks and sucks exponentially more every year after that.

                            QFT: I started trying to lose weight in earnest in March. I'm 39 and 5'11" and weighed 208lbs = paunchy bastard. Eight months later, after training four times a week and dropping 500 calories a day, I weigh 196.5. Everything hurts and I'm fucking exhausted.

                              Sweat is one of the two main ways the body rids itself of ammonia. The body needs to excrete more ammonia when its carbohydrate stores are depleted.
