    Anderson Silva's Aikido Kick

    Silva thanx Steven Seagal for teaching him the kick he used to knock out Belfort in his last fight. Now hippies all over the Earth will be able to say that aikido can win mma bouts...am I right?

    Just found it. What does Seagal think about it.

      Go read the UFC thread. It has gif and videos showing where he used the kick before in another fight.

        Also, not to belabor the point, but I don't believe that Silva (or anyone affiliated with him) claimed that the kick actually comes from Aikido but that our friend Steven helped him fine tune his technique. We also have to keep in mind that Seagal has, I believe, cross trained in other arts as well. Whatever any of us think about Anderson giving him credit (including the possibility that he is just winding us up for the trollish fun of it), I don't think it really relates to Aikido in any way.

          2:20-ish - "Will you please teach me your deadly stuff?"

          Does the fact that I cracked up laughing here mean that I've been spending too much time on this site?

            I'm not saying it's a new feature of his repertoire...anyway, this is the kind of sarcastic/hidden humor we often use in Brazil, so it's probably a little secret joke from Mr. Silva.

              ...and, of course, my immediate reaction was thinking about all the aikidokas who would use the falacious argument.

                Having not seen the fight footage yet, personally I'd have interpreted the comments in the interviews to mean that they were saying that Seagal had taught Silva a special move that he used to win the fight...

                  That's the way Silva's intended to sound in his original portuguese answers. He both states that Seagal taught him and perfected the kick. Seagal shows the same kick to Lyoto in another footage.

                    What is shamefully telling is how many MMA bloggers and journalists
                    seem to take this story at face value.

                      This is going to happen isn't it?

                      <guy goes into Aikido dojo>

                      Guy: Yo - sensei! Can you teach me to fight like Anderson Silva, bro?
                      Sensei: Yes.

                          Capo front kick. Silva has been using it for years. End of Thread.

                            So, the Seagull has been caught unjustifiably bigging himself up once again?

                              Unfortunately, we already have a bullshido poster saying he never saw it used that way before. I have in a few fights but whatever.
