    From today's pojo:

Man allegedly abused girl 6 years ago

MILLBROOK - A Hyde Park man faces charges in Millbrook village court that he sexually abused a 14-year-old girl six years ago.

Eugene Simco was charged with third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Dutchess County Child Advocacy Center. He was arrested Aug. 21 and given an appearance ticket. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Kent Benziger, Simco's attorney, said his client denies the allegations.

"The complainant is an adult who is alleging something happened six years ago, yet apparent ly never reported it to anybody," Benziger said in a written statement.

Allegations about Simco, a martial arts instructor, have been spread on martial arts Web sites, Benziger said. He said the charges were filed by a woman whose brother has a competing business with Simco.

That wouldn't happen to be Phil Milgreese (sp?) would it? Or is there anyway to know?

No, if you read the press release by his lawyer, it indicates someone other then Phil.

Is it appropriate for Simco's lawyer to issue a press release that effectively identifies the claimant?

That sounds slimy to me, even if it is legally kosher.

Unless the prosecutor wants to argue that his press release violates the professional rules of conduct for lawyers in the State of New York I would assume not.

People should decide for themselves whether they feel that his release is slimy. I suppose the answer lies in whether the defense attorney in question has a good faith basis to claim that this criminal action here is the product of a business rivalry rather than an actual assualt.

shouldn't the thread title be changed now?

I would say so. We know there was an actual arrest, so that part of the old title is innacurate. The smear allegation is still on-going, so that is still still accurate. I think that a simple title that says "Gene Simco Controversey"...or..."Gene Simco Arrested: Smear Campaign?"

I changed it, if another staff member wants to change the title knock yourselves out.

So what happens now? With Simco I mean, not the thread.

Finally the truth comes out. No, I'm not saying he is guilty. I'm talking about the court case, the charges, and the confirmation of the competition connection made by the wife.

Now to wait for the evidence and a conviction or acquittal.

Minor update: I went to Millbrook village court last night, court was held this time but Simco was not to be found, nor was his case called. Hopefully more information will follow.

Remember that the Poughkeepsie Journal is following the story in *some* form, so we have real journalists involved (though we have to wait for what they publish--hopefully people are checking their site periodically).
