Being big and strong isn't a MA.

    Discuss....

    IMHO; It definitely isn't...

Better starting point than that one guy's midget idea, though....

But it's an enourmous help! I am of avergae height, 5'8" and weight around 205lbs. My regular partner is about the same height, but he has 30 pounds on me, all of which is muscular Italian knee-breaker. My technique has to be perfect, and he can absorb considerably more punishment then I can.

I am strongly of the opinion that size and power and speed are determining factors towards effectiveness, and that to beat someone who is considerably more powerful then you, you need to be many factors of better then the opponent.

By the way, as an aikido practicioner, I get seriously miffed by those who use the "size/power/weight training/working out does not improve your aikido" line of thought put forth by people who don't like to work or sweat in order to get better.

    my two cents.

Who said is was a martial art?
Those are attributes of person, not techniques.

        This is dumb.

How much more punishment can he absorb?

It's not an MA on its own but its a vital aid to any MA. I'm taking some time off Karate for exams and work but will be replacing that void with some time at the gym. When I return I know the extra fifteen kilos or whatever will put me in a better position against some of the monsters* I face on sparring nights.

a parody of the "why fight bigger people" which i thought was a stupid thread as well

                      & I'm drunk & shit....

                      But it's true.

The point of MAs is that you can win even if you're worse off....

If you can't. Then, where's the MA?

quit your whining and pump some iron.

if you have any realistic sparring in your MA class, you'll learn that you shouldn't pick a fight with a huge dude unless it's absolutely necessary.

There's something about posting on this site that makes you thirsty for beer. There's nothing better than talking about all time you have spent in the gym or at the track while chain smoking cigarettes and belting down brew.

I love being such a hipocrit.
