Has anyone ever trained with Oscar Thrower?

Has anyone here had experience with an instructor in Virginia named Oscar Thrower? He taught for some time at the United Karate Institute of Self-Defense (now defunct), and has been known to teach at various other places in the area. I've had plenty of experience with him in the past, but I'd like to know if he rings a bell with anyone here...

    doninha,

Since you are a newb and after reading your introductory thread, I'm going to leave this post here for now. But please note the stated intention of this sub-forum:
The official forum for Bullshido. Serious discussion on McDojos, questionable Martial Artists, and relevant issues only. Help us fight fraud in the Martial Arts by contributing well-thought-out threads and ideas on the subject.

I trust your next post in this thread will not be adding on to your "shout out" and actually have some substance behind what I think you have in mind. Otherwise, my next action will be to trollshido this thread.
Calm down, it's only ones and zeros.

Then allow me to elaborate. Oscar Thrower taught at the aforementioned school for many years, claiming to be a black belt in multiple styles, including Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Judo, Sambo, Jujitsu, Kung Fu, Tai Chi and yes this list would go on if I could remember half the bullshit he would spout. He had many "disciples" that followed him around even after UKISD had gone out of business. He taught his classes from a Gold's Gym afterwards, where he would often not show up to teach his class for *weeks* at a time. That school has since dissolved as well, but I keep hearing rumors that he is still teaching in the area. I want to know if anyone on this board has had contact with him, or has even heard of him. He isn't nearly as notible as Ashida Kim or Coda Scott, but his BS is on par. I can only find two traces of him online anymore...

He's definitely past his prime, but if he's still out there teaching, I'd like to expose him before he takes advantage of any more naive students.

What's your relationship or affiliatio nwith Oscar Thrower, if any? As a student, acquaintance, training partner? And what type of proper documentation are you referring to?

Here is what I know of him from firsthand experience:

I joined the school at which he was the head instructor, United Karate Institute of Self Defense, Inc., in 1997. At the time, I was interested in learning Aikido, which he immediately told me he was black belt in. That's all I needed. After showing me some various techniques, I was sold. Of course, I had to join the regular program as well, which consisted of a blend of Tae Kwon Do and Kenpo. After progressing quickly through the ranks, I went through various phases of training with him which consisted of the following:

Training in Drunken Monkey Kung Fu (each week he would show me a new piece of a form which was never the same)
                  Training in Aikido and Aiki-jujitsu
                  Tai Chi
                  Sambo
                  Kickboxing
                  And of course... Capoeira

I only really trust my knowledge of Capoeira, as that is now my specialty. After starting to train Capoeira with Oscar, I began seriously questioning what he was teaching me. He didn't know the names of the movements, his ginga (basic footwork) was worse than a first year student (which I know all about now), he didn't have any knowledge of the music or history. He also proceeded to tell me that the stripes on the pants of some capoeiristas on a DVD were their rank. In Capoeira, ropes are worn around the waist to signify rank. He didn't even know that much.

I started to find different sources to learn capoeira while I was still training at UKISD, and I was appalled at the lies that I found out about. He told me he trained Capoeira in Brasil for 2 years with his cousin who is a master. He told me that he spent a few years at the Shaolin Temple learning Kung Fu when he was a kid while his Daddy was in the military. I can't even remember half of the things he said.

A friend of mine who was much closer to him has even more appalling stories concerning his personal life, but that would be hearsay.I am DEFINITELY inclined to believe my friend about everything he says.

That said, I'm sure some of his claims are valid. He was a decent TKD fighter, a good grappler and I did see some pictures and clips of some pretty hard sparring apart from what he did with us. I'm more inclined to believe that he has a valid rank in TKD or Sambo, but that is probably it.

The sheer scope of his lies is ming boggling though. I know that his Tai Chi was taken from a White Crane Kung Fu book that he had in the school office. And don't get me started in his Bullshido techniques...

If you are training with him, I would RELENTLESSLY check out his certifications. I was too young to care about certifications at the time... Perhaps you could bring some of his claims here so we can help research them. I'd personally like to know what (if anything) he told me was true. And dammit, don't believe a single thing he says at face value.

He is simply the least trustworthy person I've ever met in my entire life. And I work with lawyers...

Oh dear. Since no one has stepped in yet, this is for you rocketgirlot:

In this forum we ask that people provide proof of allegations before accusing someone, especially when accusing someone of a crime such as stealing. Regardless, we don't just let those things fly without evidence.

Please provide some evidence of cheating and stealing, if you have that. If not, I'd suggest maybe editing your post.

In addition (and this goes for the original poster, as well), I'd be interested in hearing how you know Mr. Thrower. Where do you know him from? How well did you know him? Did you train with him? What did you train? How long did you train with him? How long did you know him? Do you have written documentation of a specific loan you were involved in that was never repaid? Do you have any copies of liens in connection with that loan?

I think more information is needed by everyone involved before this goes much further.

                        Thanks.

                        Welcome to Bullshido.

Yes, i knew him well - this is for doninha

I knew the man of which you speak for many years. i am one of the original founders of UKISD and was head of the TKD program there. I can tell you that the 4th degree he had in Chung Do Kwan was not legit at all. I've trained in the ITF system of TKD for over 22 years (with legit instructors who have to get certified just as I have) and attained a 4th degree black belt. I've done papers on the nine original schools of TKD as well as its history and when asked he could not perform any of the forms from the chung do kwan system outside of the few that were taught at jeff smith karate (which were VERY few indeed as i was appalled to learn when i worked there back in 1992-93)

As far as his Tai chi/Kung fu I attended the school (many years later) and found where he got his techniques from.. Didn't know it at the time but recognized it when going thru some old video tapes of our demonstrations. I would venture to say he stayed there about 6 months based on his execution and what i gained as a result of training in that magnificient art.

What I can attest to is that he was a student at Jeff Smith Karate for several years. I dont know that he ever got to a full 1st degree blk belt but i do remember him getting his Novice Black (a black belt with a white stripe) but as i don't hold much regard for jeff smith at all (i watched him promote himself from 5th to 7th degree as "honorary degrees" - i just recently read that he is NOW a 9th degree which is a complete and utter joke!) I would not put it past JS to give oscar a belt as long as he wore the JSK gear at the tournaments. I know that Oscar was a competitor in the NASKA circuit for years so he knew the point fighting game quite well. He and I did a lot of point fight training and I did thank him for all his help because as we all know, once you get up there a ways in the ranks the competion does get somewhat political. I also saw him compete in both hard and soft style forms but never really getting placed for them (unless the division was really small) most of his trophies were from point fighting.

Back when we were first opening the school Oscar promoted all of us to our "next dan" and gave us all certificates - at the time I had been trying to pass my 3rd degree exam with Alan Coutremanche in Sterling, VA and it took me three tries to do it. I didnt hold much in Oscar's promotion other than him tryinjg to make me feel better. But all of the other instructors from UKISD rushed right out and bought new black belts to show off their rank. He has charisma, that much i do know and had a way of "wowing" people but not really doing anything. He had a bag of tricks that he pulled from and did quite a bit of reading but outside of that I think he was just a gifted athlete who knew enough about martial arts to be a jack of all trades if you will.
If/when he did receive formal training I would venture to say that it never lasted very long. Please feel free to email me if you have specific questions - I'd be happy to answer them either thru here or email [email protected]

I am a former student and consider myself a personal friend of Oscar. I lost touch with him over the last few years and would like to look him up.

There have been a lot of things said about Oscar but my experince has been that the prove was in the pudding and I would put his training up against any other instructor I have met.
