    counter to rear naked choke...

If the legs are wrapped the opponent who is being choked can triangle the crossed feet with the knee over the ankles and apply the pressure by thrusting the pelvic area forward.

I felt the pressure on my knees in the direction perpindicular to the directions it naturally moves - back and forth.

Give it a shot tell me what you think.

Yes, it hurts like hell, don't cross your feet.

Doesn't work if the attacker breaks your neck.

I'd be more worried about the lack of blood to my brain.

If the choke isn't sunk in, they will let go/tap and never cross their feet again. It hurts that much.

Most people should not cross their ankles when taking someone's back. It's a big no-no for obvious reasons. I had it drilled into me from day 1 not to cross my ankles when I'm behind someone.

If someone has the choke sunk in, with their hooks in properly (ie. not crossed), the rear naked is tough to get out of. However, when someone is going for a rear naked, I was told to keep your chin tucked so they can't get the choke sunk in. Also I was told to arch back to relieve pressure, and pull down on the guys wrist and elbow. Then turn _into_ the choke. By then, you should be able to squirm out of it.

            I think.

(Edited to add that I'm at the stage where I have been unable to get anyone to tap to a rear-naked, but have tapped to one myself a couple of times. :P)

i think not crossing your feet at the ankles is the rule not the exception....the technique you mentioned is in one of the gracie books...but nobody i roll with crosses their feet, so...

What do you guys think about this apparently new fashion of locking the feet triangle-style when you have the other guy's back, with one calf across the guy's stomach and and the other outside of his hips?

                  No, that's news to me.

Does it stop them turning properly ?

On an actual note, I thought that was pretty standard fare?

SLJ: if it is tight, and they turn, you can just turn with them. So they may get to the knees or whatever, but you don't lose position.
