It all depends on their origin. For example Kung Fu is very religious in its nature coming from Temples. Would be like a style that came from Churches here in America. The focus in that system is not only fighting but also self "enlightenment". Now im talking originally of course. But then something like Okinawan Karate was developed for the purpose of just raw fighting nothing fancy.

In particular kung fu martial arts are listed in 3 ways. You have the pure external art like Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Muay thai. You have the eternal/internal arts like Hung Gar, White Crane etc. and then you have the pure internal arts like Bagua, authentic Tai Chi and Xing yi etc.
            Hope that helps abit.

External Art - Muay Thai - Concerned with the gross body mechanics of beating the crap out of soemone.
Internal Art - Taiji/aikido - concerned with the internal body mechanics to generate more power/stability/sensitivity than would otherwise be possible.
External becoming internal - Muay Thai using structure to unbalance an opponent.
Internal becoming external - Aikido learning to just punch the fucker.

When you have both, then you can be considered good.
