Aikido vs "kickboxing" - awful youtube video.

Right, first off, I did do a search for the term Aikido vs Kickboxing, and did'nt find anything relevant to this thread. So i'm sorry if it's been posted before.

The vid is called "Aikido vs Kickboxing" And features a Hakama-wearing guy "defending" against a "kickboxer" "kicking" him. "Kickboxer, I say, cause the opponent is wearing a gi and belt, and "kicking" I say, cause it's fully compliant, and obviously angled to make Aikido seem like the most awesomest MA in the world!!1!

Besides the already pretty horrible video, do please take a look at the completely absurd and asinine comments to said video, wich I refuse to quote, since I'm already trying to forget.

So basicly your only argument against this video, that never claims to be 'alive' and is obviously demonstrations of techniques, is 'ZOMG AIKIDO IS FER NOOBZ AND HAS TO BE BOOLSHEEDO!'

yep it's a demo of what aikido moves against a kick should be.

Of course applying them against someone that attacks randomly is a bit trickier...

That, and the fact it claims to be defending against a kickboxer, wich the opponent obviously is'nt.
And most of the techniques demonstrated in the video are unrealistic and dangerous to the practioner.

I noticed nage got kicked in the face a few times while catching that kick. Thank god that was a demo and not a sparing match.

Step 1) Block high kick with face.
Step 2) Grab foot
Step 3) perform aikido

I spent part of this weekend with an ex-MP around San Antone who does old-style "break them in half" aikido (you know, the kind where you actually hit people), and I can just see him crying in his beer over those comments. Like the tool who actually thinks strikers don't understand distance...

That said, I've performed the high-line defense (albeit with a throw, not a fancy finish) shown at 00:16 into the video against a noncooperative but sloppy kicker who let me roll with his kick, rather than retracting his foot like the grappling-paranoiac all kickboxers should be.

So maybe the point is that aikido can protect you against crappy kickers? There are certainly enough of the latter out there...

COMPLIANT crappy kickers. I serioulsy doubt the usefulness of most, if not all techniques demonstrated in an "alive" environement.

Those kicks pretty much sucked ass. I would, at best, label that as a demo. Nothing more. Absolutely no set ups and no follow through on any techniques. That aikidoka actually did a yokomen uchi to the top of his head. Friggin' moron.

Taken for what it obviously is, A DEMO, similar to the gymnastic XMA demo stuff, there where some pretty cool trap/catches, throws, and reversals in there (with the exception of the catch kick with face move at 0:17, and the crapliant uke at 0:30 and 0:31) Hell the leg trap and throw at 1:05 is pretty cool to watch.

Realistic, NO......entertaining, SOMEWHAT
